I don't care if it's a fairly slow software week, Catherine on PS3 being number 1 worldwide (and number 1 in Americas) is so cool. I know I want to play this game, but I also know me buying this game is rather unlikely. These days I only buy games I know at least one of my kids will also play and Catherine isn't such a game.

One thing I've noticed about Nintendo and Sony over the course of these last 3 generations Sony's been present: the PlayStation seems to hang on longer. Seems the Wii (like the Gamecube against the PS2 & Nintendo 64 against the PS1) ran out of steam. It's like Nintendo gives their all the first couple of years and then tires, while Sony continues on supporting the console years and years after launch.

It's especially notable this gen because the PlayStation isn't the market leader for the first time in it's history. I wonder what's left for the Wii, Nintendo just dropped the price and without enough software, it could be on it's way out after holiday 2011. At least with the 360; Kinect, Halo: CE Anniversary, Gears of War 3, Halo 4, & one more price cut will make sure it remains relevant  through 2013.

Sony has the luxury of having great third party support no matter what their position in the market is and Nintendo apparently wants to have that too, because it would enable them to make the games they feel like making instead of games that keep selling the hardware. When you look at the last three generations, Sony could pretty much do whatever they wanted and it didn't matter at the end, because third parties carried all of their systems (Sony's first party never played a major role). Nintendo's consoles always heavily depended on first party software and by year four third parties pulled out regardless of the available installed base.

The Nintendo 64 and Gamecube couldn't have made it much longer than they have anyway, but the Wii actually had the potential to keep on going despite lackluster third party support, so this is the first time Nintendo cut the lifecycle short. They do this because they want third party support and for that they need a fresh start, a new console. It's not going to end well, but they do it anyway.

Yep, much truth here (although I'd argue Sony's 1st Parties have made a much stronger impact now than they ever have, which is definitely one of the reasons the PS3 has remained ahead throughout 2011 - not to mention the 360's presence made sure the PS3 couldn't take off with 3rd parties like it's predecessors did).

The Wii U will be a fresh start for Nintendo though, so maybe things will finally turn in regards to 3rd parties.

I wonder about that. If Wii U processing power is somewhat better than PS3/360 but PS4/720 processing power is miles better than PS3/360 then Wii U might find a similar level of 3rd party support as this gen. Is the CoD demographic really going to desert PS360PC for Wii U? I have my doubts. and I think Where CoD goes 3rd party support goes too

I don't see Wii U dominating the gen as much as Wii did either. In Americas I think Kinect has captured the motion control imagination and I don't think a tablet device is going to compete with Kinect. I think MS are going to push Kinect really hard in the Americas at the launch of the next gen. Though with the year (I doubt it'll get 2 years) of sales it gets before PS4/720 launch I think Wii U is likely to be the biggest selling console of the next gen.

Wanted to say, good to see Brink (360 at least) holing on to some reasonable sales. My boys really like it, it's a neat, quirky game, almost makes me want to play it, and there aren't many FPS I can say that about.
