Brazil Baby Thought To Be Dead Cries Before Burial

SAO PAULO — Brazilian police say a newborn girl was saved from being buried alive when she started crying at a funeral home where she had been taken after doctors declared her dead.

A police statement says that the 14-year-old mother was seven months pregnant when she gave birth on Tuesday at the Santa Casa de Misericordia hospital in the city of Araxa.

Police say the hospital reported that the baby died moments after being born. The body was sent to a funeral home and as the undertaker was preparing it for burial, the girl started crying.

The baby was rushed back to the hospital and placed in an intensive care unit.

The hospital confirms the incident but gives no details. Neither police nor the hospital released names of the mother or child.

Brazil Baby Saved From Live Burial Dies

SAO PAULO — A newborn girl was saved from being buried alive when she started crying at a funeral home, but she died Wednesday after being rushed back to a hospital, medical officials said.

A 14-year-old mother who was seven months pregnant gave birth to the girl Tuesday at the Santa Casa de Misericordia hospital in the nearby city of Araxa, according to a police statement.

It said the hospital reported that the baby died moments after being born and her body was sent to a funeral home. As the undertaker was preparing it for burial, the girl started crying.

The baby was rushed back to the hospital and was then transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit at the Hospital das Clinicas in the city of Uberaba.

"She died of multiple organ failure caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood," said Joao Paulo Vicente, a spokesman for the Hospital das Clinicas, speaking by telephone.

Neither police nor the hospitals released the names of the mother or child.

God, the poor mother.
She had to experience two deaths of her child. That's just so sad.
RIP poor baby.

I agree. She probably was so happy when she saw the baby was alive, and then it died for real. A punch in the face is nicer than this.

age of consent in brazil is 14

And just how did you happen to know this?

In the "developing" or "emerging" economies it is not uncommon to witness these ocurrencies. I'm not talking about the baby dying two times, but the mother being fourteen.
In the poorer areas of these countries, many engage in sex at early ages because of uneducation (if that's a word). Many do it out of sheer boredom!
Girls pregnant in highschool are not uncommon either. It's really lamentable.

As for the competency of the doctors, my guess is that the mother gave birth in a "cheap" hospital. I can't really give an opinion of this because I do not know the state of the healthcare system in Brazil, but my intuition tells me that it's not as good as it should be.

This is completely bizarre...

I'm not sure this has anything to do with the age of consent...
