Forums - Nintendo - Should Nintendo discontinue the DS line altogether (not 3DS)?

I used to think stuff like this was crazy, but in all honestly, one can no longer blame it on ads. Its a 3d system, how are they supposed to show that in magazine or tv?? They cant, its something you have to see and Ninty has 3DSs in just about every Gamestop and Walmart, big time stores, so the problem is, is that people just dont care. Its a hard pill to swallow but its the truth

It's that they don't care specifically about it being 3D or not. If it gets the games, they'll care, but it's had a slow start software-wise undeniably.

Wait until the holidays, which is really also what Nintendo should have done for the price-drop

I suppose Nintendo didn't want the non-gaming media run stories about the big failure the 3DS is because it didn't even manage to move 50k units in August NPD. This kind of bad PR must be considered.

I just hope the public is interested in the games it gets, I dont want this to fail. Dont want the cell phone market to gain more ground

This depends on the market.

People arguing that the DS is still selling like hot cakes and generating a huge proft. Doesn't matter when investors are running for the hills and Nintendo is imploding. The profits from DS aren't nearly enough to prevent Nintendo from taking much larger losses. So the DS is now a factor is it a liability, is it impeding 3DS?

If Nintendo could boost DS hardware and software sales up enough to convince investors that their money is safe. But investors are always looking at the future so even if DS and Wii sales were through the roof investors would still be worried.

I think with 3DS dropping to 169.99$ that Nintendo should drop the whole DS line. Why bother selling DS at a loss or for barely any profit when they need to shift 3DS units. I doubt Nintendo will keep DS around much longer, and its in their best interest to drop it all together. I think it would lead to higher 3DS sales which would start to sway investors and at the new price with DS gone it should rape the PS Vita.

About Wii U competing with PS3 and XB360 instead of PS4 and XB720, wouldn't it be like telling people next Ninty console will be born one generation old? And to compete with them, XB360 currently starts from less than $200 and PS3 will start from $200 soon, Wii U should be sold at a loss. About portables, DS can still profit at $100 catering for those that don't want to spend more than that, but if Ninty isn't interested, I guess Sony will be more than happy to keep that market segment all for itself.

Well with the 3Ds dropping to 169.99$ Nintendo will need to drop DS prices drastically as well. Meaning either selling them at a loss or for very little profit on each unit. Why keep a product on the market that barely turns a profit when your latest product is capable of doing everything the older product could?

The DS continuing to sell just harms Nintendo. Nintendo needs to shift 3DS units to calm investors and to appease angry third parties who are cancelling games left right and center. Nintendo needs to make 3DS a success and they need to do so quickly. No investors won't care if DS remains on the market any longer, its not that profitable now that 3DS is selling so cheaply. It makes far more sense for Nintendo to drop the DS all together.

Nintendo is counting on software sales to bail them out now that 3DS is selling at a loss. If the DS continues to sell gangbusters at barely a hardware profit or at a loss then it isn't worth while for Nintendo to keep it on store shelves. An increase to 3DS sales will mean more software sales, both DS games and 3DS games can continue to sell.

It just doesn't make any buisness sense to keep DS on the market. Even if it continues to sell gang busters it doesn't make any logical sense!
