The ds dying sounds way to risky what are you a banana? Or more like nuts?

Lol that's true. In all reality I am not a big DS fan to begin with, however there are gems to be had on the DS (better version of Chrono Trigger, TWEWY, Bleach RPG games, Order of Ecclesia, among others), and I am sure the 3DS will get respectable hardware. I do believe that Nintendo perhaps should have marketed the DS better, and I will tell you why. The constant revisions they did to the DS with DSi , DS lite, DSi XL, so naturally the 3DS was most likely seen as another revision. If Nintendo plays their cards right and markets the 3DS with a bit more focus on games and just pushing that the 3DS advantage is giving depth of field as oppose to the shiny pop out images, it will work out well. They are a smart company and I am sure they will do fine. There is no need for doom and gloom. I even think the price point was not a bad idea at all, and the price drop was done mainly to satisfy investors (personally not a smart move in my book) by pushing sales through price point. I think this is a shorter term effect because it is closer to the original DS price point therefore causing consumers to believe even more that the 3DS is a better revision. Who knows, I could be wrong (I hope in the long run I am), but I think Ninty just needs 1 pokemon game, 1 2D mario game and BAM, laugh their way to the bank.

For the love of--you forgot megaman legends 3!!

I honestly do not know how much of a following the Megaman legends series garnered. Personally I loved 1 and 2 on the PS1, but jumping to the 3DS straight at 3 would feel wierd unless they release a trilogy or remake (would be the best idea). Megaman Legends series seems a bit more niche to be quite honest (great games nontheless). I could see a Mario Galaxy on the 3DS as an absolute perfect match for it, but they simply have to be careful with going too crazy with the pop out since it can give headaches if overdone, but depth would work out well. For 2D, I think Nintendo should get Frozenbyte to hop on board and produce a Trine for the 3DS, now THAT would be absolutely gorgeous and the depth perception would be out of this world. I platinumed Trine on the PS3 and loved how tight the platforming felt. I do feel however that from a hardware perspective at this point in time, a single analog nub is archaic. Heck, I believe Sony's biggest mistake was releasing a PSP 6 years ago with a single nub. Despite the stylus, many people do feel more comfortable with dual analog on games nowadays (something nintendo pretty much started in a sense and Sony pushed further). On a side note, God Eater Burst would be the damn near perfect game for me if I didn't have to use the Claw technique to play it (enjoyed it much more than MH, and I recommend you give it a go, the story is awesome too).

I suppose a trilogy of sorts would make sense for megaman legends, I just let my fan boyism get out a little..damn capcom...

Honestly though the 3ds should've been designed with another analog stick, why would they not include an additional stick, seriously?

yeah ninty needs

ninty is does not have the same strategy as sony

DS will actually hurt 3DS this holidays and in the longterm in brandterm

every ds sold is not a 3ds not sold. Fact is most people dont want a 3DS.

No...why would any company discontinue something that is making them tons of money?

Maybe in a year or so they should discontinue it so the 3DS can grow more.

Lol. if this were a problem, the PS2 would have tanked, because it's just another PS.

Fact is, parents/casuals will not call it a PS2, or a PS3. They will call it a Playstation, regardless of whether it is 1, 2, 3 or even in some cases P.

They will not say "I was playing angry birds the other day on my eyephone three gee ess. They will simply say iphone. Yet they still understand that it is a new version.

Regardless, no, discontinuing an extremely profitable piece of hardware would be dumb

The ds is still going very strong they should keep it going for as long as they can but try push the 3ds as their main handheld

No, but I think they need to seriously consider giving the WiiU a different name.

This. If they don't want people with Wii to not buy a Wii U thinking it's just an upgrade, they have to change its name.

As for DS...if is giving profits, they can't kill it. But they should start marketing the 3DS properly, as they are in the UK (I saw an ad were they said "this is not DS, this is 3DS", that's the point).

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

I wholeheartedly agree with both these posts. Was about to post something similar in fact. It will take some time for the 3DS to build up a good enough library and feature list to make it a valuable alternative to the DS, but until that happens Ninty still need their money-maker.

Differentiation from the old DS line should be their highest priority in terms of marketing the 3DS for now, and hopefully this is a lesson they will apply to Wii U going forward. If they market it as a Wii that can also play HD games then basically they appeal to a saturated market. It has to give the impression of being a new, unique experience.

On a broader note, I think this is another sign that as hardware gets better and better, upgrades become less and less important in the eyes of the consumer. I hope console generations continue getting longer in the future, only being short when there is some serious breakthrough in entertainment.
Incidentally, the Wii should have enjoyed a longer life according to this line of thinking

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

@OP: let me see... It sells both more HW and SW than 3DS, it has a princely profit margin on HW and it can keep a good one even cutting price... Yes, excellent move!

i still think they should have kept the same price an release a remodeled version and a real pokemon game then reduce the price of the old version. feels like this decision was made in a very short period ...

anyway when pokemon comes and all the other games the problem will be solved.
