Forums - Gaming - THQ Ends The Red Faction Franchise

Due to poor sales, THQ has decided to put an end the Red Faction franchise.

Red Faction: Armageddon has signaled the end of not just a familiar red planet, but an entire, transmedia universe. Speaking during an investor call this evening, THQ CEO Brian Farrell described the franchise's reach as "niche," and consequently no longer worth pursuing.

"Given that that title, now in two successive versions, has just found a niche, we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way," Farrell said. He described the development team at Volition as "talented," and noted that they would be moving on to the company's Guillermo del Toro project,
Insane.

Though
Red Faction: Guerrilla fell victim to a B-for-botched launch campaign in 2009, it was received well enough by critics and "niche" consumers to warrant further exploration. 2011 brought a sequel (Red Faction: Armageddon), a promotional spin-off (Red Faction: Battlegrounds) and a SyFy original movie called Red Faction: Origins.

We'll try to get more info from THQ regarding its decision, but for now you can return to the older games (there were two before Guerrilla, by the way!) and extract some relevant lessons for the future. Bonus: If you complete Red Faction 1, you'll learn how to defuse a bomb.

So that’s pretty much all she wrote for the Red Faction franchise folks. The series’ latest entry, Armageddon, had the misfortune of launching the same week E3 2011 kicked off, as well as Infamous 2.

What do you think, were Armageddon’s poor sales just bad timing, will you miss the franchise, or are you thinking good riddance?

I only enjoyed the first one on PS2. I don't think they needed to announce the end of the franchise. They could have just quietly never made another one.

Or they could have said nothing like everyone else and revisit it sometime in the future with better success and name recognition if they need a quick bit of money.  Now they'll look silly when they inevitably do go back.

I Never played one and I guess from this news......I never will

you all the games for free on steam for just buying the last one, its a shame because this game has a very destruction engine , you can spend hours just blowing stuff up for fun.

Guerrilla was a great game, Armageddon demo turned me away from buying it. Just awful. They took everything good about Guerrilla and made it bad.

But yeah, a game about spiders and scorpions made more sense to THQ.

what other platform are you gonna put a game for player to play as a spider and a scorpion?

On Red Faction - shocking!

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Don't get me wrong I love the destruction in these games but aside from that they are pretty boring games IMO.

In Ps2, I loved Red Faction 1 and 2.Best Fps games in whole Ps2 era.
Why in hell they made it TPS...

Take my love, take my land..

Well of course it ended.
They took awesome RF Guerrilla and then made Armageddon.
