Some people are saying that if they release a pokemon, mario, kirby, etc, game for the 3DS, it will sell a lot. But that didnt happened with the N64 nor the Gamecube. Those consoles have those games and yet sales wise they were a complete failure. Most sales of this games overlap, so if mario, pokemon, kirby sells 20 millions each, it doesnt means that the handheld will sell 60 million, at most it will sell 35M.

The wii was selling a lot not because of the games, but because of the controller; so old people and/or moms who care not about mario or zelda bought the console. And that market is now saturated.

Stop fooling yourselfs by thinking that games are going to save the handheld (and will increase wii sales). If the 3DS succeeds it will be for other reasons, and not nintendo games.

If nintendo games were the solution, the N64 would have sold better than the PS1, and the gamecube would have sold better than the PS2 and yet that didnt happened. The PS1 and PS2 would have sold like crap according the previous statement because it didnt had any 20Million seller game; and yet that was not the case.

Nintendo consoles are quite different from other consoles in their user base; because they are only appealing to nintendo fans (and now to moms / old people), and not to a wide range of gamers. The PS brand has a high mix of users, the ones that buy God of War may buy uncharted or maybe not, the ones the buy Infamous may or may not buy Killzone; and so on. So if 20 games sell 2-2.5M, that means in this case almost 45M consoles sold.

Most people bought the DS because of the touch screen, and the 3DS has the same that is why it is not selling. And most people bought a Wii because of the controller, and the idea behind it (not being in the couch, and be "active") not for the games.

Well, that is what I think. I know nintendo fans will consider it far from true, but if you think about it, it makes sense :D.

Your argument as to why games aren't the solution to selling a console is flawed: you assume that the quality of Nintendo games has been consistently high since the NES. But it hasn't, and so the N64 and GC didn't sell as well as their previous consoles. Also, a console's success isn't determined by a single game: the whole library ( well, at least a good part of it ) must be games you want, and since the PS1 and 2 had such a huge amount of games, it makes sense that there was something for a lot of people, and so sold as much.

The Wii and DS didn't sell because of the controls: the controls lowered the barrier of entry, and allowed more people to play games, but there had to be games that they wanted as well. Think: did you seriously buy a PS3 or 360 thinking "oh, that controller looks different!" or "ooh, I like that console's D-pad more", or was it more along the lines of "Damn, that game looks sweet, I want it now!"?

And why would Nintendo fans somehow be a homogenous group of people? Why would it be impossible that they cover a broad range of people, like the supposed PS fans?

If I remember correctly, isnt Ocarina of Time (a N64 game) the best game rated ever???.     Gamers 20 years ago didnt have the chance to play on other great console; because the competition was ultra lame; so nintendo took all the cake.   But it is no longer the case.     The case of Sega was almost the same thing, people bought it because Sonic, etc; but those people were not enough.  So, when the PS1 appeared it destroyed the N64 (and the saturn).   And the PS2 destroyed the gamecube (and the dreamcast, and the xbox); obviously sales wise.

PS3 or 360 gamers bought  the console because of the games, while most "gamers" bought the Wii/DS because of the controller/interface.   If the wii didnt have that controller it would have sold the same or less than the gamecube, because it has the same kind of games.   So the ones that buy a nintendo console actually for the games are not so much.     Also the first xbox  having the same 3rd party games as the gamecube plus some exclusives; sold more than the gamecube, even without having the 1st party titles nintendo has.   Nintendo games sells a lot, but the sales overlap.    Most gamers in the world dont give a damn about nintendo games; that is why if they have the chance to play other great games on other consoles they will take it.    If you say nintendo gamers like so many kind of games, then tell me why then most third party games in the wii suck sales wise???  like No more heroes, or Mad World for example.  The only games that sell good are nintendo games, and games that "promote" not being in the couch, and be "active", like Just dance, Zumba fitness, MJE.

If the PS brand were like the nintendo brand, the PS3 would have been ultra doomed considering how it began, and yet it is the best selling consoles worldwide today.    The PS1 and PS2 have a good variety of games so they succeded (sadly companies now do mostly FPS to increase revenue) and now Sony is filling those gaps in the PS3 era with their 1st party games, that is why the console today is kicking ass.   And that is NOT going to be the case with nintendo and the 3DS.  Mario = plataformer, Donkey kong = plataformer, Kirby = plataformer, Super smash bros = plataformer/fightnig game, Zelda = action adventure, pokemon =  some kind of RPG I guess? lol.  That is why I am saying, that if the 3DS succeds it will because of other things and not nintendo games.

Now, you will probably tell me that if the PS brand is so good the PSP would have better sales.     If you think about it for being the 1st big push of Sony in the handheld market it is really a great achievement 70M far from a failure.   Also the system would have sold way more if piracy wasnt so heavy for the system.      In the beginning the PSP had lots of awesome games (and lots of PS2 ports by the way), and those games were the ones that promote most of the system sales; and were the ones pirated first, so companies didnt earn what they expected.    And because of that, fewer great games were released, because they need big budget, and if they were not going to earn cash by selling it, then what´s the point??   And so the sales began to decline.   I know it is sony´s fault to make the system so vulnerable, but most likely they will not repeat the same mistake with the vita.   The difference in sales between the DS and PSP would be much lower if the DS didnt had a touchscreen.

As I said before, most people dont give a damn about nintendo games, that is why if they can play 3rd party games elsewhere they will do it, that is why the N64 and the gamecube sold poorly.  You could say most gamers are "Nintendo game phobic".   The Wii U most probably will be an epic failure, unless the controller is "revolutionary".   But, even if it suck sales wise, nintendo games will sell similar as in the Wii.

So? OoT's high rating sure didn't help the N64, because that was only 1 game, which just isn't enough. And the competition wasn't lame: the Sega genesis was a very serious competitor, changing Ninyendo's dominance with the NES to just simply beating the competition. As for the PS1, it sold so much more thanks to new territories, and not having to deal with the US government, 8.56 million SNES's in EMEAA vs 40.12 for the PS1.

If the Wii hadn't come out with it's controller, it definitely wouldn't have sold as much, since a most likely more complicated controller would have been a barrier to a lot of people, but it would still have sold more than the GC, just because the games were different. If we look at Mario kart, it sold around 7 million on the GC, but a massive 27.72 million on the Wii, and it's sales aren't dropping. So although it's still Mario kart, the Wii version is undoubtedly better.

I'm rather stumped as how you can say that most gamers in the world don't care or like Nintendo games. It's as though NSMBWii or MKWii never happened. Wii series as well. If you had said ceveloppers, then I would be agreeing with you. Though to be fair, this only holds true if Nintendo makes the correct games, so if they make the wrong games,  then yeah, people won't want them.

The PS brand might be strong, but not as much as you give it credit, ir at least you can destroy it easily: PS3 has been, overall, pretty catastrophic, since it neither held on to all those PS2 owners, and well, made Sony lose billions of pounds. Which isn't a good idea. As for the PSP, it sold well, managing better than any protable before, so definitely congratulations to them, but if we're talking about brand power, we have that the PS brand lost to the "3rd pillar console" brand.

You criticize Nintendo's lack of variety in their big games ( I think ), but not only do they sell loads more than any of Sony's games, with only the GT series being comparable in size, you forget a few: racing, MKWii; sports, Wii sports; Fitness, Wii Fit, which does add a bit.

Also, I would really like to know what makes you think the Wii and the DS sold not because of their games. Why else would you buy a video game console? To stare at it? Because it's so pretty and shiny? No, it's simply to play the games that you want, so fair enough, there might not be games that you want, but a few tens of million people disagree.

Madworld and No more heroes didn't sell so much because simply they had flaws which didn't make them so good. Though in fairness, NMH sold much better than any game Suda 51 made before, so it was actually a successful game.

And finally the WiiU. That thing is very likely to be a failure, just like what's happening with the 3DS, but not just because of the controller, though it is absolute shit. It'll be because the games will be crap. And I wait with hope that those two failures will make Nintendo release good consoles.

Why did the ps3 get a bump on 6/18 and it seems to be holding, is it because of all the games they are putting out?

@Heavenly_King

You speak the truth. The people who believe nintendo's beloved franchises are going to turn around the 3ds sales are kidding themselves. Sure the nintendo faithful will always support the consoles for those games but the masses don't care about those names.
