Sorry Jackie boy, but it seems that Sony's PlayStation 3 has been dethroned as king of streaming Netflix. That's according to a recent Nielsen survey that pegs the Nintendo Wii as the most used device in households to stream Netflix (outside of the computer, of course), and puts all three gaming consoles in the lead in terms of Netflix streaming to devices.

The survey, based on 12,000 online interviews in March 2011, weighs a variety of devices against each other in terms of Netflix and Hulu streaming, from Apple TV on the low end at just one percent market share, to "Directly on Computer" as the most employed method at 42 percent for Netflix and 89 percent for Hulu. The Xbox 360 brought up the bottom of the list in terms of game consoles, with just 12 percent of Netflix users going that route and two percent of Hulu users.

The real bizarre factoid in this graph is that the Nintendo Wii is also (just barely) streaming more Hulu content than the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 -- especially odd considering there's no official support for Hulu on the Wii. We've reached out to Nielsen for clarification on that possibly erroneous statistic.

I was going to post this the other day but some reason didn't. What is interesting is that Roku unit scored pretty damn low. I posted an article that Roku was making a Wii like remote and having games like Angry Birds being available. No one posted a single comment in that thread.... While it isn't a game changer it will probably help Roku sell more units in the future.

Couldn't that be because they have nothing else to do? :P

Obviously this shows why random surveys are terrible actual measures of usage. That bit about the Wii and Hulu streaming just goes to show this survey is bunk.

Why not just get official usage figures from Netflix, or from MS/Sony/Nintendo themselves. Since Netflix streaming is still US only (I believe), I would wager that the actual results would show the 360 the highest with Wii possibly second and and PS3 last, but those two could be swapped.

Or it could be the fact that their are 10 million more Wii than the 360 in USA (and you don't have to pay to get on Netflix (I am pretty sure you have to pay for Live to use Netflix on 360)).  Also, the Wii price is half of a PS3.   Basically it is one of the cheapest way to get Netflix (besides Roku players) and can play games.

I know you are messing but others like nightsurge believes the 360 should be on top for Netflix usage.  Sure the 360 dominated Netflix in the beginning since they were the only ones but I believe a lot of Wii owners have taken advantage of Netflix once they finally released the channel.  However, nightsurge did bring up a semi valid point that they should just get the figures from Netflix.
