Forums - Gaming - The most important aspect of gaming

I think you mean user experience. It's the connection between you and the game. A good feel emerges when all elements inside and around a game are just right. So the elements you mentioned above are just parts that make a game feel good. Every experience is personal so you cant say play this or that.

If thats true we would still be playing interactive movies on 3Do. The issue around graphics is in my opinion that its the easiest way for gamers to review a game. This already happens before the game releases. Everyone has already seen the game and made there little review based on graphics.

The graphics, obviously; a game needs to have top notch graphics in order to be truly immersive. Why do you think the gaming industry is stronger than it ever has been in the past? People vote with their wallets: they might say that they want gameplay, but their actions contradict their words; it's clear that graphics are what really matters.

When a new generation of consoles come out, what do people argue over? That's right: which has the best graphics!

When a hyped game comes out, what's the worst flaw it can have? Disappointing graphics.

Why did FF13 have no towns? Because the developers recognised that it was best to compromise gameplay in order to make sure that the graphics didn't suffer. It's better to have a linear world that looks good and is immersive than a bigger one that looks like garbage because there wasn't enough time to give enough attention to all the scenes.

Graphics are what matters most. Devs know it. The media knows it. And deep down, the fans know it.

If thats so how come somebody that's accoustom to playing games with high end graphics can still play  and enjoy super mario bros in its original 8 bit form. When developers are making games they should make sure it "feels" good at its basic level then build the game on top of it. As in mario bros it "feels" good to jump, jump on enemies, and jump over pits hence the entire game "feels" good/fun to play

Graphics, sound,  controls, gameplay mechanics/design , story. Which one of is these is most important when you sit and participate in your hobby for hours? If you choose any of the following you're wrong. The most important aspect to gaming is none of the above.

The most important aspect is the FEEL of the game.

Thats right, this is what connects you to the game the most. But one may ask. What do u mean by "feel"? Well its hard to describe. But to get an understanding of what i mean, go boot up the old Mario 64 cartridge. Then run around a little in the castle field. do a couple of side flips. The way how Mario run around 'feels' just right, right? You dont really know why it is, maybe is the way how mario foot contacts or grinds on the floor while he moves. How about when he jumps, do you 'feel' a invisible tension between him and the floor. I'm not really sure, but whatever it is, its feels right, and its entertaining just to run and jump around in an empty field.

Another example of this "feel good effect", go start this game( if you have access to it), Samurai Showdown 4. Select haohmaru, then hit your opponent with  a fierce slash ( forward and C on neogeo). It sure fells good doesn't it. Maybe it's the sound that his sword makes on contact, or the lil slow-mo the game has when this action is performed. But somehow the feedback the game gives just makes it 'feel' good, and you want to do it once more.

Now go start God of War 3, hit enemies with your blades of chaos, its feels like  its hitting nothing. Probably why many prefer the gloves when fighting. It has the best feedback when you hit something. Personally, I probably wont have finish that game if the gloves weren't an option.

So that's it. In games every action should 'feel' right(or good). That's what's been connecting you to your games all these years, and it works to a sub conscious level. Its is what older games like super mario bros, street fighter 2, metal slug has been counting on as a hook. And I think its what developers are forgetting when they produce their games. You can't develop a shooter and its doesn't feel good to shot something. You can't have a slasher and it doesn't feel good to slash your enemies, you can't have a platformer and it doesn't feel good to just run and jump around. No matter how good the graphics, sound, controls, design/mechanics are, once the feel of the game isn't there, the entire experience just feels empty.

And lastly, do not confuse "FEEL" with controls or gameplay, its an entire aspect by itself. And yes there should be an entire category describing the FEEL of the game in reviews.

If you think there was something missing or wrong in most games recently, the FEEL was it.

Am I wrong? What do u guys think is the most important aspect?

No you are right, the Feel you describe is like "sensory centres"  uuuhhh a part of the brain concerned with the cautious appreciation of sensation. It is not one of the elements like gameplay, graphics, control, sound but the whole pack of elements together wich give this exciting rollercoaster effect. Call it "Experience of Sensation". What for you creates that FEEL can be for others just normal. It is funny that you took mario 64 as an example, because that game brings an important experience  with it as well in that time, wich can also be added to the whole pack of elements, and that is that mario 64 the first game was with an open world 3d environment (yes Nintendo was the creator of this important milestone............ I understand what you mean with God of war, it feels so smooth and it goes as it flows, with one hand behind your back....   It is not possible to create that feeling for every new game , and that is a good thing because you will have more appreciations for that one game that haves it........ For me Dirt 3 have that experience, when you disable al  the driver asssist and you join pro session hardcore, after a while you become one with the car and the track, the sense of speed  in this game is so awesome good, that "sony computer entertainment Polyphony Digital with their 5 years in progress beeing Gran Turismo 5" could learn a good lesson from the much smaller developer Codemasters.

@Kudistos Megistos,

It all goes hand in hand , with better and improved graphics you create better leveldesign wich create new gameplay, that is how it goes the last 10 years or so but the graphics are reaching soon the point of "we are at the final stage, this is just perfect". so the priority shuffles from graphics to fysics, gameplay, sense of control.

BTW, about final fantasy 13, with that part the fanbase has lost a lot of players, it looked so static and clinic, they whiped all the fun parts and sidequest from the storyboards, nothing to explore left behind just from gate to gate walking, really boring and anoying....BUT HEY "we have improved graphics"

The most important aspect of gaming is having fun.

You have a point, but it would be analogous to popular music and Justin Bieber. Just because the masses agree on something it doesn't mean that they are right.

Graphics definitely are the wow factor, though.

For me it would be control, i need to feel i have control over my character. When i press a button or move the stick a certain amount i expect my character to do what i'm saying. A tiny bit of delay or not exact movement is what bothers me. Many gamers just think all FPS games are the same but each one has a very different feel to them. I would say for most they found this in CoD, and along with fast and smooth gameplay they have one of the best selling games ever.

This of course changes from gamer to gamer, i for one can't use motion controls but others love them.

Dude how dense all you, the gameplay mechanics/design are what makes the feel of the game, well there's some story too but either way the feel of a game isn't a single aspect

Mechanics are the rules in the game, design is the layout and structure, the feel is what I explained. Its important that developers treat it separately
