How about when he jumps, do you 'feel' a invisible tension between him and the floor. I'm not really sure, but whatever it is, its feels right, and its entertaining just to run and jump around in an empty field. Another example of this "feel good effect", go start this game( if you have access to it), Samurai Showdown 4. Select haohmaru, then hit your opponent with a fierce slash ( forward and C on neogeo). It sure fells good doesn't it. Maybe it's the sound that his sword makes on contact, or the lil slow-mo the game has when this action is performed. But somehow the feedback the game gives just makes it 'feel' good, and you want to do it once more. Now go start God of War 3, hit enemies with your blades of chaos, its feels like its hitting nothing. Probably why many prefer the gloves when fighting. It has the best feedback when you hit something. Personally, I probably wont have finish that game if the gloves weren't an option. So that's it. In games every action should 'feel' right(or good). That's what's been connecting you to your games all these years, and it works to a sub conscious level. Its is what older games like super mario bros, street fighter 2, metal slug has been counting on as a hook. And I think its what developers are forgetting when they produce their games. You can't develop a shooter and its doesn't feel good to shot something. You can't have a slasher and it doesn't feel good to slash your enemies, you can't have a platformer and it doesn't feel good to just run and jump around. No matter how good the graphics, sound, controls, design/mechanics are, once the feel of the game isn't there, the entire experience just feels empty. And lastly, do not confuse "FEEL" with controls or gameplay, its an entire aspect by itself. And yes there should be an entire category describing the FEEL of the game in reviews.

No you are right, the Feel you describe is like "sensory centres" uuuhhh a part of the brain concerned with the cautious appreciation of sensation.It is not one of the elements like gameplay, graphics, control, sound but the whole pack of elements together wich give this exciting rollercoaster effect. Call it "Experience of Sensation". What for you creates that FEEL can be for others just normal. It is funny that you took mario 64 as an example, because that game brings an important experience with it as well in that time, wich can also be added to the whole pack of elements, and that is that mario 64 the first game was with an open world 3d environment (yes Nintendo was the creator of this important milestone............ I understand what you mean with God of war, it feels so smooth and it goes as it flows, with one hand behind your back.... It is not possible to create that feeling for every new game , and that is a good thing because you will have more appreciations for that one game that haves it........ For me Dirt 3 have that experience, when you disable al the driver asssist and you join pro session hardcore, after a while you become one with the car and the track, the sense of speed in this game is so awesome good,that "sony computer entertainment Polyphony Digital with their 5 years in progress beeing Gran Turismo 5" could learn a good lesson from the much smaller developer Codemasters.

It all goes hand in hand , with better and improved graphics you create better leveldesign wich create new gameplay, that is how it goes the last 10 years or so but the graphics are reaching soon the point of "we are at the final stage, this is just perfect". so the priority shuffles from graphics to fysics, gameplay, sense of control.
BTW, about final fantasy 13, with that part the fanbase has lost a lot of players, it looked so static and clinic, they whiped all the fun parts and sidequest from the storyboards, nothing to explore left behind just from gate to gate walking, really boring and anoying....BUT HEY "we have improved graphics"
