Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Lots of 3DS games cancelled. A worrisome trend?

I can think of a similarly large list of PS3 games announced in 05-06 that never saw the light of day. Though I don't think it was publicly known most of them were canceled so early in the system's lifespan.

Eight Days
The Getaway 3
Ni-oh
Coded Arms: Assault
Eyedentify

etc, etc.

There is a lot more competition in the portable space today than when the DS was released. There are numerous smartphones, tablets, and other devices that are challenging the stranglehold that Nintendo once had on mobile gaming. Just showing up and expecting people to buy in will not work.

Couldn't agree more, but there will still be a lot of people in denial over where portable gaming is moving for the mass market.

Unless Nintendo adapts, it may find itself stuck with an increasingly shrinking niche market.

I would buy more 3DS games, but gaming period has been put on the back burner for the ever piling-up bills

Which would be what? Sell out to the cell-phone companies?

Specialist handhelds will endure the way specialist consoles endure; games that make them worth buying over the PC that you definitely already have

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

It was the combination of a weak launch library, a steep price tag, the Japanese earthquake, and the fact that Sony will be bringing a more powerful handheld to the market for the same price that has domed 3ds.

nintendo needs to get the big name games (mario and mario kart) out and do it quickly before the 3ds becomes too far gone. even though there are a few other first party titles on the horizon but i don't think that they would have much more of an impact than zelda did

they need mario to sells some systems and build the user base so these developers don't abandon the system

2011- The console is not selling to well without games. We can't be successful on this.
2012- First party games on the console are selling to well, there is no place for us to be successful.

I'm very happy. The faster the 3DS dies the faster the company will be forced to make stuff that sells. That being not high-budget 3D titles.

I don't think those listed games are really indicative of anything but I've never been sold on the potential of 3DS.

And I think releasing 3DS and immediately announce Wii U was an even bigger mistake. Unlike DS which was dirt cheap to develop for and had a massive base, 3DS is now a big investment to develop for with a small userbase. If Nintendo had played their cards right they would have made it easy to port games from 3DS to Wii and even lead the way. That would give developers a much bigger base to develop for at almost no extra cost. But aside from graphics the systems are too different in many ways. With Wii U announced, Wii is essencially dead, meaning 3DS must stand on it own.

There are two markets - casual and core (for arguments sake). 3DS won't get either. Why? Because the casual market has moved to tablets and smartphones - where development can be much cheaper and reach a much wider audience so any developer looking for that market will go tablet/smartphone long before 3DS.

Core games will all go HD. Developers now have 4 platforms - 360, PS3, Wii U and Vita all sharing the same graphics. 5 if you include Ipads, 6 with PCs. Why develop core games for 3DS? It's not cheap anymore and without Wii's massive base, the odds of being profitable are slim, even with the Wii's base they aren't that hot.

Apple and Android have disrupted the portable market. Nintendo's response was far too timid and most likely, so is Vita's.
