well considering how dev friendly psv is...I wouldn't be shocked if this is the path they take

Yes, but at the end of the day going with either AMD or Nvidia won't make development more difficult, so why go that route with all the troubles it can bring?

well the only problem would be BC right? but again I won't give these rumors much weight. Remember all those Tegra rumors around PSP2?

Yes, rumors also said back then that Tegra would be used in 3DS.

And as one the sources say (Hardoc) Sony decided to go Nvidia just 1 year before the launch of PS3, so with them anything is possible.

That last part is a myth that keeps getting repeated without any proof for some reason.

Here's an article from 2004, two years before the PS3 was released, where they are anouncing their collaboration. The way it's worded seems to imply that they've been working together since the begining, so it's not just a last minute thing.

We all now that Nintendo will use an ATI AMD graphics chip with WiiU, but apparently both Microsoft and Sony will also go red with their next consoles.

Going with AMD makes sense for both Nintendo and Microsoft as they are using their chips with their current gen consoles and this guarantees that almost every game launched for Wii or Xbox360 will work with their next consoles. And you can ask Microsoft how troublesome can be going from one camp to the other, not every game launched on the original xbox(Nvidia) works in the xbox360(AMD).

The shocking news if true is Sony. We haven't heard of any troubles between Sony and Nvidia that may have caused this change and (again, if true), they won't be able to have fully backwards compatibility. Again. So, why would Sony do that?

Anyway, if true that means 2 things:

1-AMD would have scored a major win over Nvidia. Being the provider for the 3 console manufacturers guarantees them a lot of sales and revenue that their rival couldn't threat. It could also lead to an advantage with the coding of PC games, that may end runing better on AMD GPUs.

2-Having the same(or very similar) GPU architecture on all the consoles would simplify the work that has to be done when porting a game from one console to another, meaning that multiplatform games would be faster, easier and cheaper to make.

For Nintendo it (probably) doesn't matter which architecture they choose because backwards compatibility can (probably) be handled through software emulation of the Wii/Gamecube. For Sony/Microsoft it shouldn't be an issue because they probably restrict access to the GPU through an API (DirectX or OpenGL) which acts as a hardware abstraction layer; similar to how they operate on a PC.

Even though the Xbox 360 uses DirectX, the version it uses is different from the PC version. It exposes a lot of the console's custom hardware and allows you to do a bunch of low level stuff you can't do on PC (like directly accessing the GPU's command buffer). Sony has it's own proprietary low level library that developers use that gives the same low level access to the GPU. Hardware abstraction layers don't make much sense in a fixed platform like a console since you can just write directly to the hardware. And even the few there are (like the PS3's OpenGL ES implementation), most developers choose to ignore them and go for the low level access because it's just faster.

"It is highly likely that Microsoft's 3rd generation Xbox will be sporting a new IBM cell processor as well although it is slightly, ever so slightly possible, that this could change."

wat?

great more games at lower cost cross all plattforms.

Makes sense, 3rd party publishers must be putting a good deal of pressure on the hardware makers to have similar hardware to ease portability

Bad news for everyone who isn't IBM or AMD, though...

rumor is that sony is working with ibm on another cell

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

This is off topic because it won't let me make a new thread because I only have like 20 posts.

Anyway I was wondering what everyone else thinks about which game I should buy.

1)resistance 2, I have the first one and have to play this one before the 3rd one comes out, but I'm not getting the 3rd one till Christmas.

2) darksiders - I have been looking at this game for about a month and I really like that genre and it got pretty good reviews and every user review I've seen has been positive

P.S. I am buying one of these games used on gamestop, R2 is 20 and darksiders is 18. And I am a power up rewards member so I can get 10% off. I normally buy new but since these are older games I don't think it's gonna be much of a loss to the developers considering they are making sequels to the games.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was true given Japanese developers' "port everything everywhere" mentality. That would be a good thing because it wouldn't be a hassle to port things around.

One bad thing that I see down the road is limited backward compatibility for the PS3. The RSX was made by Nvidia right? It would just be another no (or limited) backward compatibility.  Looks like we will see more updated collections.

As much as I like the idea of a unified platform, this is not sitting right with me. Sony has got to make sure the PS4 is capable of playing all PS3 titles, and I just don't see it happening with an AMD processor. Sony can not allow itself that disadvantage going into the next gen. It would would be on the same level as the $499 PS3 launch price.

I'm kinda concerned. PS3 BC is pretty important to me...
