Great graphics were not enough for today’s market, says Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida – and that led the company to innovate in other ways to help developers make PS3 games like Uncharted “even better” on PlayStation Vita.

Despite a lot of talk of the PlayStation Vita being able to match home consoles in the visual department, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida has said that the standard of modern graphics meant that being close to the home experience wouldn’t have been enough for the Vita on its own, leading Sony to innovate in areas such as touch and motion control when designing the handheld.

“After a couple of years with the PSP people get used to looking at pretty pictures and especially after the launch of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 the expectations for graphics moves on,” the President of Sony Worldwide Studios said.

“Just having great graphics on a pretty screen wouldn’t have been enough. That’s why we spent so much time innovating with user interface devices like the touch pad or camera and motion sensors.”

But Yoshida now believes that the resources put into these areas means that the Vita can surpass its home console big brother when dealing with franchises such as Uncharted: “We really want our developers to be able to look at all the additional UI’s and connectivity features that Vita has, and how you can make their PS3 games even better, more intuitive on PS Vita.”

“When you try Uncharted on PS3 graphically you can compare it to Uncharted 3, but the unique way that PS Vita version uses the touch, the camera and motion sensors you should feel that this is an Uncharted experience on PS Vita that you can’t get on PlayStation 3,” he told gamesindustry.biz. “That’s what we’re trying to achieve.”

I Like what I hear, it intills hope that somewhere in SONY hasnt completely given in.

Kinda agree with SY. Graphics are useful but not necessary to make a popular game. Hopefully what he says stands true and the PSV is able to differentiate itself from the ps3 and be successful.

good read, see their getting innovative now thats good. the wiiu and psv should induce some pretty unique experiences.

stop at uncharted3 graphic's and move on. i want to see wht im playing with the most important part being gameplay.

That's good that he's saying it. I view input device innovation the same way as graphics. It can't save a good game. In the end, whether it has good graphics or innovation, a good game is what matters.

like what he says, just dont care about the motion controls or the touch screen, will not use any of those features in any psvita game i end up buying, i care the most about the 2nd analog stick being included in the design.

I hope this means we will see some innovative stuff on the Vita. Uncharted looks good, now I just need that innovative Gran Turismo.
