Lolz, so let me get this straight. Nintendo plans a tablet type controller....and haters call it a gimmick?
Sony plans a virtual boy rip off......and people say it's a great idea?
Just goes to show the Nintendo haters around here, it's getting pretty damned sad.

How is it a rip off?  You're kidding yourself if you think the Virtual Boy offered anything remotely approaching virtual reality.

I've been waiting for this for a long time. It already exists, but a hmd with two 1080p screens will set you back $39,000 atm. If Sony can bring that to mass market then yes please.

Advantages:
- No cross talk, color loss or flickering when watching 3D content
- Head tracking actually makes sense, no peaking out of the corner of your eyes (and a lot easier to do accurately when tracking a headset)
- You can have your own 10 ft high cinema screen without needing the space

Add some decent surround headphones and you can be fully immersed in your game without disturbing anyone around you.

Hmd devices with transparent screens also already exist. Together with accurate head tracking you can have some real augmented reality. Holographic displays are still a way off. But we can simulate the same effect with a transparent hmd device. Project an object in the room that you can walk around.

Who said anything about virtual reality? Virtual Boy was a headset that displayed 3D images, same as the contraption in the article.

How can you seriously not consider this a copy of Virtual Boy ? Let me guess, PS Move isn't a rip off of Nintendo Wii either right ?    >.>

Yes, its a virtual boy ripoff okay?
Drop it.

Its a shame Nintendo fumbled the concept of VR so dramatically with the Virtual Boy. The concept will be a hard notion to sell in the future because of it. Gaming companies have to always have the idea in their back pockets though.

There is so much in the realm of VR that would truly be that next omg moment in gaming. You wouldnt just be viewing the world through the tv but you would have the sensation of being in that world, just like in lawnmower man.

And yes, the virtual boy was a virtual reality type console the same as the much more expensive stand up ones which twist and turned the gamers bodies before that.
Everything comes from something, and the idea of VR only slightly resembles what the virtual boy had.
-Red Lines inside of a headset.
I would love if the PS4 or 5 had this tech.
The main player would play through the headset, and what is seen would also be transmitted and displayed on the tv as an option. One day...

Are you really suggesting that Nintendo invented that king of headset?

Virtual reality, just like 3D, is a dream that the gaming industry hoped to realize since a long time, but on the same note, nobody ever asks if that is what consumers actually want.

Well what would you like?

Personally I think a vr headset is perfect for racing games, flying games or anything else where you control a vehicle from first person view.

Augmented reality with transparent glasses will be a great novelty and maybe even bring forth some fun games. Imagine tumble where the stack is projected on the table in front of you while you can walk around it and attack it from different angles.

Walking around with it will always be akward since you'll need a controller for that while you can freely look around. It will be like driving a wheelchair through an fps.

It won't do anything for third person shooters or platform games except give you cross talk free 3D. Maybe in those cases they can use the headtracking to actually keep the 3D image in the same place as if you're watching a stage in front of you.

It's not suited for all or most games, but flying a plane or racing a car with a vr headset, sold! Being able to watch 3D movies on it is a nice bonus too.

Exactly.  The Virtual Boy wasn't true virtual reality, it was just a 3D headset.  Virtual Reality actually transports you into a world, one that you see through the eyes of your character.  Somewhat like a FPS, only with this your body movements are what controls the character.  You move your arm up, the character does the same.  You move your head, the perspective changes like it would in real life.  The VB did none of those things.  If anything, the 3DS offers the same experience as the VB, sans headset.

I hope Sony persues this.  Wii U and Xbox 720 wouldn't even be an afterthought if Sony had this powering the PS4, albiet at a reasonable price.  To make it somewhat cheaper, I could see them having an improved PS Eye and Move controllers for tracking your hands, body, and the headset, while the headset would only be used for displaying the image.  And they defintely need to make it where your TV displays everything the player is seeing.

Hmmm, PS4 with virtual reality glasses for the graphics and move for the controls?

So you won't be able to see the friends and family you are smacking upside the head while trying to play! Brilliant!

LOL, Bill Clinton must have been waiting for this since he married that scary thing and even more since they spawned that other scarier one.
