Wait, what? There are games that only support 16:9?

I suppose it's not really my problem as I have a 16:9 monitor... But it does suck. 4:3 monitors aren't too uncommon just yet, and it shouldn't be hard to support them properly. What about 16:10? Would it work any better? Or do these games not support 16:10 either?

No, no 16:10 support either.

I don't need a 16:9 monitor for everything else I do on the pc, but now I need to upgrade to keep playing games in the same vertical resolution i've been used to for years. So I would need a 1920x1080 monitor, and probably also a new graphics card to render the extra pixels at the same fps, which also means installing a new power supply nowadays.

And sure then there are no black bars, but it still doesn't make sense for games where the vertical axis is just as important as the horizontal, ie rts and top down action games. I don't see any point in playing civilization or tropico in widescreen.

Im looking at my Witcher 2 Config right now and Im selected at 1920x1200 (16x10)

Hell, I even see 1280x1024

Yes, and then it gives you black bars when you play the game in that resolution, so it only let me play at 1280x720 effectively.

Same as Dungeon Siege 3, I select 1280x1024 and it just fills the top and bottom of the screen with black.

There is something else going on for you.  I just pulled out my backup monitor (21' Sony CRT 4x3) and it auto ajusts fullscreen  @1280x1024

Maybe they patched it by now? They promised to fix it in 1.3 I finished the game with patch 1.1 and 1.2, 1.3 wasn't out yet.

Sometimes I wonder why I still bother playing games when they come out :/ I'll hold off on my dungeon siege 3 purchase until they add mouse look and 4:3 ratio.

Im running 1.1 (they are at 1.2 right now).  Unless I have problems I never patch my games (or unless there are important fixes, like the Witcher 1).  The game runs great for me, so the "performance" extras arent enough for me to patch.

I did, then I folded and got a 16:9 monitor (for some reason they are far cheaper than the same size 16:10) now games that don't support 16:9 are the problem lol,

That's true for me. Specially since I am interested in old games as I started playing games on a personal computer a year from now and I want to check out great old games I have missed.

Of course this has nothing to do with what the OP stands for: allowing every gamer, regardless of their hardware, to have a adecuate experience. Games made in the past could not foresee the change of standards.

Exactly. The pc has always stood for supporting multiple resolutions, different 3D render solutions, different sound cards when still applicable, different input methods. I admit they were rather slow with adjusting to proper widescreen solutions, but why now abondon the good old 1280x1024, 1600x1200 monitors?

Heck some games are best played on 9:16 resolutions, setting the monitor on its side. Ikarugu for example.
