Albany, New York (CNN) -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the state's marriage equality bill hours after it passed the Republican-controlled Senate on Friday night, making it the sixth state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage.

Cuomo signed the bill into law after the legislature cleared the way to legalize same-sex marriage with a 33-to-29 vote, the first time a state Senate with a Republican majority has approved such a bill.

The new law, which will allow same-sex couples in New York to marry within 30 days, drew a sharp rebuke from opponents, who spent millions to try to defeat the measure.

"We worry that both marriage and the family will be undermined by this tragic presumption of government in passing this legislation that attempts to redefine these cornerstones of civilization," the state's Catholic bishops said in a joint statement released late Friday. It was signed by Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan and seven other bishops.

i like how the bishops all think so highly of their own little corner of the world....anything in their backyard is magically so important and historic when they arent even the first state. or the presumption of the church to think it has the moral right to define civilization and impose their will on everyone in it. i dont think god would be impressed with their idiocy and arrogance towards their fellow human beings.

This is good news, and a step forwards for American politics.

And to think, in the supposedly liberal UK, it's still illegal.

Europe is commonly accepted as being more liberal than the USA. Moreover, David Cameron calls himself a "liberal conservative", Nick Clegg is a Liberal Democrat, and Ed Miliband has openly stated (one of the few policy statements he has made, really) that same-sex marriage should be legal.

titles are kinda meh, it's not gay marriage, it's same sex marriage, you are not gay if you are a bi-sexual, so the gay logic doesn't work with those misleading titles besides the second video, but whateve I guess.

What politicians call themselves is irrelevant. So are the views of people who see Europe as a homogeneous bloc contrasted with the US.

The UK is recognised by people who actually look at government policies and the state of government infringement of people's rights as one of the most illiberal countries in the Western world. In some areas (privacy is a good example) we're behind Russia.

We're certainly less liberal than the US.

That's cool, I haven't been actively following this but I knew about it and figured they would legalize it. It's funny when I hear about things like this, I think about a guy I used to work with, I'd actually call him a friend, and how sick this probably makes him. I kinda wish I still talked to him so I could bust his balls about it.
