Forums - Gaming - How Long before Tablets overtake Laptop and Game Machine sales?

I see a future where you have a tablet PC, and you can:

  • Plug a keyboard and mouse into it for greater functionality
  • Plug game controllers into it and play games
  • Digitally download all your media needs through online retail services (Lovef!lm, Netflix, Spotify, Qriocity etc)
I know you can actually do all this at the minute, but not very well. If you want to to work, a Laptop is still superior, and if you want to play games, Game Machines are still superior.
But, once Tablets become significantly more powerful and less expensive, surely they will replace the need for most Laptops/pc's and Game Machines.
How many years are we from this point? Or will there always be a strong demand for PC/Laptops and more traditional Game Machines?

well it depends if they decide to do quality tablets or not..... I mean something like the iPad is a joke for newbies, fashion victims, or geeks with too much money to spend..... at that price tag for an iPhone with a big touch screen bad components.... bad app support for independent apps.... stuff like that..... it's not gonna happen any time soon

I mean it might take over in sales... but it doesn't mean it will take over a PC in terms of quality and functionality....  hopefully it will... if people support other brands than the mainstream one... that do low quality in a nice box with nice catch phrases in their campain... same to replace consoles....

I want something with some sort of processing power... nothing less than 2gb of ram.... 250gb storage min.... stuff like that...  a real PC in a tablet... not an oversized sparkly smartphone.....

all in all I don't think anything gonna replace anything.... meaning that we will probably see a change in the basic stuff like TV having PC like functionality in them with a slot for your smartphone/hanheld/external HDD/media player receiver/ remote/ game pad/ (all that being one device that each member of your familly owns) you come in the room your TV recognize you through your cellphone.... starts your fav app/ TV show / game

we'll see less diversification of devices and a blending of function in one device... but right we just have a pile of messy crap, for wana be techies, or fashion victim.... cause there is nothing out there right now that really justify there price tags..... especially since most of what peeps do on it is still useless...

blue tooth can take care of keyboard and mouse, but some kind of external hdd support is always appreciated. or just have something like OnLive would work too, assuming your latency doesn't totally suck balls. What I'm really looking forward to though, is the ultra thin OLED displays which would significantly reduce the size and weight on top of being more power efficient, much more power efficient.

I know, but surely it is enevitable that quality Tablets will come.

There is certainly demand for the kind of device me and you are wanting.

It's a question of when, in my opinion.

well yeah but look at it like that today for the price of a smartphone and/or a tablet I can have a shitty fake smartphone at 50 bucks with unlimited data/text plan and 300 min for 30 bucks max a mont... with the savings I make I can by myself a nice handheld/console and or PC with a longer life span..... and still be able to check my e-mails, go on google map, make calls, get text, go on FB.... sure I can't scan a song in a club to have the title or play angry birds while driving, or have slide show of pictures in HD.... but at the end of the day I have a better quality experience by keeping it on different devices.....

hopefully it is going to change..... but I doubt it is going to happen that soon.... unless windows phone picks up... why because when was the last time you saw dev working on an mac OS game or Linux dev....and mac doesn't look like they are looking at putting quality hardware in there non PC line.... we'll see, but the other question is, is it really the same people we are talking about.... it will happen.... in how long depends on how each category of consumers will blend together into the same market... that's more the question....

For gaming...fast. For serious computing and work...never.

I can't use my android tablet for anything but light gaming and consuming content and I dont see that changing.

Really depends on your workflow. I find my tablet excellent for note taking and document layout, even if it stinks for elaborate text. So I create a rough draft on the tablet, review and polish the text on a PC, then go back to the tablet to insert images and arrange everything into an attractive document.

There are also ways to integrate a tablet into your PC workflow, using it as an extra screen, input device (see Adobe's Creative Suite apps), or just a reference.

What I'm really excited for is the wireless display mirroring coming in iOS 5. I've never before looked forward to giving a presentation.

How long? Hopefully never. The optimist in me wants to believe that people will eventually see through Apple's marketing and see that tables are ridiculous.

However, the pessimist in me realises that most people don't do anything resembling serious work on their computers and rely on advertisers to tell them what to think and what they want. Tablets are useful for people who obsessively check Facebook every three minutes, so maybe they'll overtake real computers quite soon.
