Forums - Gaming - Gamespot's Game of the Year is... (Drum Roll)

Looks like Microsoft failed to deliver their monthly check.

Did anyone really expect Gamespot not to give it to SMG? I would have been shocked if another game got it simply because I expect Gamespot to play things safe after what happened earlier this year. Expect no surprises or shockers from them for at least the next year.

Wow, wasn't sure you could sink to a new fanboy low, yet here it is.  It was the best game this year and it wasn't on the 360, get over it.

I hate the idea of anyone giving it to CoD4. Bioshock I can tolerate, although it's given more credit for originality than it really deserves (As anyone who owns both it and System Shock 2 can tell you). CoD4 though plays EXACTLY like CoD2, but with better online multiplayer, and a really short campaign. I think they had a lot of opportunities to evolve the CoD franchise with CoD4 and didn't take any of them...

My #1 choice for GOTY if it's not SMG is Orange Box without contest. Again, I don't mind Bioshock getting it either.

I don't know naznatips, it really is just a preference thing. If I go by your post history, then you seem to like a fleshed-out singleplayer game over a fleshed-out multiplayer game, so of course you are going to prefer Biochock over CoD4.

Non of the CoD games were a very good source of a single-player game for me. They excel at multiplayer, and that is what most fans seem to have come to expect out of them.

Just so you know, for my goty, I would have to give a tie to SMG and CoD4. I liked Bioshock and the Orange Box, but the other two were more fun for me.

I do have to ask though, when you say that CoD4 plays exactly like CoD2, do you mean in terms of controls or in gameplay experiences?

Edit: Correction, my goty is a tie between the pc CoD4 and SMG.

Edit 2: And please explain your answer, thanks.

Good job, Nintendo! Finally getting the glory back. :D

I'm still not convinced it is the best game of the year, I have gotten into many other games more.

Super Mario Galaxy!

All 10 nominees are amazing games. I'm surprised how many Xbox 360 games made it to the finals, which was 6. 2 PC games, 1 Playstation 2 game, and of course, 1 Wii game, also made it, but sadly, there were no Playstation 3 games.

It were only 2 Xbox 360 exclusivs, the rest was multiplatform.

I wasn't bashing SMG...

Games of the year, my foot.

Here's the problem: the top ten list contains... a shooter. A shooter. A shooter. A shooter. A racing game. An action game. A shooter. A shooter. A Cold-War-themed war strategy game. Oh, wait, there's also a music game and a platformer.

Sure, some of these are great games. But we're talking two games with possible mass appeal (music game and platformer). The rest are niche games for a niche market -- the shooter demographic -- mostly very young guys looking to get their crosshairs on. Nothing wrong with that, shooters can be great fun, but that's not the only kind of gaming experience out there.

I don't think you can fault a game for it's genre. Yeah, there are a lot of shooters there, but a good deal of diversity within those shooters (half life-portal, bioshock and CoD4 are all very different experiences), and truth be told there really were a lot of great shooters. This is a result of the marketplace - shooters are hot right now, as at one time were platformers and fighting games. That means that shooters will get disproportionate amounts of resources devoted to them, and have a bigger attraction to talented artists, and thus it should be no surprise that you get a number of very well made shooters.

Smg deserves it.

I woud be dissapointed if they choosed Halo 3.

You were, however, suggesting that Gamespot gave it GOTY to enhance their credibility as a non-biased source, not because it was the best game this year.

At least they didn't pick Kane and Lynch.
