Forums - PC - Suggest Some Stuff to Push my Top-End GPU

So a while back I posted http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=128482this thread about a budget PC I had built. That's still my PC, except my power supply is now 750 watts and my graphics card is the nVidia GeForce GTX 580 (currently the highest performing single GPU on the market, though you could get better performance with SLI of two of them or two weaker but still very powerful cards). You're probably wondering how I ended up with a $450 graphics card on a budget build, and it's because we are currently working with nVidia to provide people with reviews on 3D Vision games and information on the 3D in games, thus the need for a top of the line 3D capable graphics card, which our partners at nVidia sent out to me.

So basically, I'm tyring to get a handle on what it's capable of. I've already run The Witcher 2 in 1080p maxed out (including ubersampling) in the mid 20fps range, above 30 without ubersampling, but I'd like some other games to benchmark. So please give me some helpful suggestions so I can get a good idea of what my PC's updated capabilities are. Games that make good use of 3D are, of course, appreciated, as that's something I'm testing out as well.

Hang on...are you talking about Nvidia 3D vision? Or just polygonal 3D games?

In either case, Metro 2033 will rape your systems resources. Just Cause 2 PC is surprisingly demanding too if you max everything out. Crysis 1 is always up there as is the new Alien VS Predator for some odd reason reason.

Check out my new build btw - http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=130806&page=1#

Yeah 3D Vision not just polygonal 3D, but we'll also be doing 3D blips on PS3 game reviews in the future (They also sent me a 27" Active 3D LCD monitor to play the games on, which I'll use some for 3D on PS3 too).

Also jeeze, what the heck do you do for work that you can afford all this?

Pretty sweet...Nvidia 3D games to check out are Metro 2033, Mafia 2, Just Cause 2. Here is a list actually - http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-3d-games.html

Everything 3D ready is pretty muchg flawless in 3D. Excellent rated games are very good too.

And let me guess...they sent you Acer HN274H monitor? Its the only 27 inch monitor which supports 3D vision, is 27 inches and can work with PS3 3D.

And I work in the advertising industry... :)

Metro 2033
Battlefield 2 (not serious but its still something)
Crysis/Warhead
Crysis 2

That's all I can think about for the time being.

I have a feeling Rage will be pretty epic on the PC and Battlefield 3 as well.

Excellent thank you. And yep, you got it, that's the one. I replaced my 32" LCD with it. It's got 3 HDMI slots and DVI which covers my computer and my consoles as well as my cable box, so I have no real reason to pick 5" of LCD width over 1080p and a much picture all-around. I sit less than 4 feet from it anyway so the size is fine for me.

PS: They sent me the overclocked 580 too. Not sure how big a difference it really is, especially when I'm pretty sure it came with an overclock utility to overclock it yourself if you want. I really should overclock my CPU, as it's obviously holding me back more than the GPU at this point.

You're probably right. Overclocking the 580 won't make much difference in your case. I suggest getting 3D Mark Vantage benchmark and running it on performance. The score you get for GPU should be 25000 plus on a stock 580. If its less, your CPU/memory is holding you back.

Overclocking the CPU and memory could give you a nice boost as well.

Otherwise, if you can get your hands on a Nvidia compatible 3D projector...you won't regret it. They are the best 3D you can experience at home at the moment.  I have the Acer h5360 and it blows away my viewsonic 3D monitor out of the water. They are like 500 bucks these days which is a complete steal...

Maybe later in the year/early next year. I have other priority purchases this year (A PS Vita, an Asus Eee Pad Transformer).

If you want something that is not shooter you could try Shogun 2

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

I'm thinking of getting that 3D monitor and Nvidia Vision, what do you think of it so far?
