Forums - Gaming - So, what kind of gamer is happy with Duke Nukem Forever?

I am curious what kind of gamer is happy with Duke Nukem Forever.  Among the apparently more modern gamers, they are saying it is old and stale as far as a design goes.  The graphics are said to be horrible also.  And a lot of discontentment, as per the reviews.  So, it would seem like maybe old school Duke fans might like it.

My survey of one, speaking toa MONSTER Duke Nukem fan about DNF, is that he is not happy with it.  He hates Steam.  He hates the level design and the lack of freedom, and he doesn't like being limited to two weapons.  He likes the Duke world itself, and also feels the graphics are real good.  He says he likes it, but that is with a bunch of cavaets and negatives.  He actually ends up saying that he thinks the mainstream idiots of today would really like it, because it holds your hands through everything, manifesting his old school contempt he has at new gamers.

So, I am curious who actually likes the game out there.  When I say like, I mean REALLY like and would consider it a candidate for game of the year, not that it was better than people were saying and enjoyable.

So, is Duke Nukem Forever sitting in a limbo state where it really doesn't do enough to really please either the classic Duke fans or the new mainstream gamers?

I'm sure the duke fans are happy, well not with the reviews anyway.

I quoted a big Duke fan.  What I saw also on forum posts regarding the changes, is a revolt over the design changes to the game.  So, I am not sure about that either now.

I'm sure the duke fans know the game suck, but the major reason people will purchase this title is because of pure nostalgia.

I more or less agree with your Duke lubber; it's a decent game with quite a few small negatives. I still like it, though!

Oh damn that sucks how they're dealing with a game series they love being changed so dramatically then.

I have no idea. Probably a few gamers here and there but I don't think there's a simple group.

It's a bit hard to get old-school gamers to like a game with pretty linear levels, regenerative health and a limit of two carriable weapons in a game like this. Duke is badass, he shouldn't have to retort to ducking behind covers. He should also be able to carry every gun he can find.

On the other hand, weak story and 'stupid' humour do no good newer gamers. I also believe the experience should be more cinematic for these gamers.

Basically Gearbox (or 3D Realms, or both, I don't really know) tried to modernize Duke but did so in the wrong areas. The game would have been better if they just let it be properly old-school. That, or they should have ditched the Duke in the game and just used the name for something entirely different (a reboot). Personally I would have found that extremely despisable.

Look at the reviews at Metacritic. Seems like the only people who like the game are Duke Nukem fans, Duke Nukem Fans who made multiple accounts(all positive reviews are in a row), and people who still living in 1998.

Anyone who's breaking the law is obvious a criminal.

It very much had a decent number of changed to it, which looks like it got it away from the classic style of health packs and also carry a wide range of weapons on you, and linear level design.  It is because of this, I am curious who would like it.

The hardcore Duke fan I know was fragging the game over it, but thought the graphics were good, and commended that the game didn't crash on his PC.
