Forums - Website Topics - Automatically lock threads?

PMing a mod, incidentally, is exactly what you're supposed to do in that case.

We all have widely differing opinions of what constitutes a good thread, and we don't want hot topics being filled with two year old threads. Conversely, it would be a LOT of work to track down all threads that are exactly a year old and lock them.

So I say our system works.

I honestly don't see a big deal about bringing back old topics if they are still relevant ala Rock on 2008's "will the 360 ever pass 50 million" thread.

I would create that nostalgia thread but I'm at work and I'm using a phone. 3G is pretty slow tonight and it takes me forever to view a single page. Plus, I'm lazy, too! Maybe somebody else is awesome and sexy enough to do it.

nostalgia includes a general interest in past eras and their personalities and events, especially the "good old days".

Oh lol, I was under the impression that it maybe was not an English word =p.

I only ever have a problem with necrobumping when the person doesn't add anything worthwhile to the thread. If new information surfaces that is related directly to that topic, then yeah, feel free to bump it and post the information. If it's a thread related to a specific game (for example, ameratsu's mega Demon's Souls thread), and a new player is looking for help, that's fine too.  On the other hand, just quoting somebody to say "I agree" or some other silly one line  response should be discouraged.

Simply locking all threads is a bad idea, given there may be legitimate cause to bump a thread.

Edit:

I get the feeling many here are stuck in the mindset that bumping any old thread is bad, which I guess is something that has been ingrained in many posters' heads over the years.  Instead of assuming that all bumps outside of a certain window are a bad idea, look at why it would be a bad idea.  There are many reasons why resurrecting an old thread could make perfect sense.

Actually, this somewhat relates to an issue I have with the many new forums now in place.

The Off Topic section of VGChartz has always been rather slow.  If anybody were to make a thread about, say, a movie, it would be clearly visible on the front page while active.  Place every thread about movies in a single sub-forum, and suddenly you have plenty of very old threads populating the front page, which encourages the bumping of old and often very dead threads.

Looking at the politics forum, the oldest thread of the 15 on that board hasn't been posted in since June 6th.  By the time the front page of that forum is full (30 total threads), that oldest thread will have probably been dead for over a month.   And that's by far the most used of the OT sub-forums.

The site doesn't have near enough traffic to necessitate all these sub-forums.

Also, it would only take a simple script to lock all those threads.  :P
