Forums - Nintendo - Kotaku: WiiU dev kits are underclocked and not finished

The madness about WiiU continues and now it's time for a note that pretty much scratch all the technical information that we got about the WiiU (wich is .... not really much)

According to a Wii U white paper published by Hit Detection, the consulting company founded by former Newsweek journalist N'Gai Croal, the kits in developers' hands are just not up to current-gen snuff, but they are working.

From the report:

Developers have underclocked development kits, and worked hard to deliver titles running on that hardware to demonstrate live at E3. However, due to titles not looking much better than what is currently available on Xbox 360 and the PS3, Nintendo decided late in the game to not show those titles and focus instead on tech demos

so we should discount what we've heard from developers then?

So wait your telling me that Nintendo sent underpowered dev kits just so that no one knows how powerful this console will be not even the very people who are going to make games for them ?

I love fighting games !!! Come on challenge me !

I don't even think Nintendo knows what's in the Wii U.

IMHO i think that the Wii U will end up being quite powerful when its all said and done. But i wouldnt expect anything amazing from devs within the first year.

My reaction.

you and i both

No suprise here, IBM is still working on the chips and the final hardware hasn't been built. The current Dev kits were obviously not the final kits heck as someone pointed out Nintendo may not even have the final kit. I mean if the hardware is still being developed how could Nintendo have a final kit.

Fact is the kits that developers do have are said to be 50% more powerful then the PS3. That means the final kits could be even 100% more powerful. Also I'm relieved to hear Nintendo decided to use tech demo's so close to E3. That means Nintendo created the bird demo and the Link demo in a very short time frame.

This should indicate that WiiU will be a super power and true next gen console. Can't wait to see the final product in action. Nintendo is definatly taking a more hardcore approach this gen, the question is will it pay off or will it under perform?

Or maybe, developers are expecting the console to be 50% more powerful but with the current dev kits they can't achieve that. To be honest the Zelda demo looked very good because it was very well designed but aside from some lightning effects maybe it did't looked like something impossible to be reproduced on a Ps3. Even if it was made in a short time it's not suggesting a 100% power upgrade. What I mean is it's a bit too early to jump to conclusions, meanwhile I wouldn't get my hopes too high.

so after they reach final spec will it be able to use two screen-controllers?

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

Nothing new. Red Steel was running on a GameCube-powered Wii devkit, and the 360 devkits at E3 2005 were also underpowered compared to the real console.
