Forums - Nintendo - Wii U won't support DVD or Blu-Ray playback... your thoughts?

I would have at least expected DVD playback, but I have several other DVD players so it doesn't really affect me.
If it really helps to keep costs down, then it's OK I guess.

Did anyone expect it to?

It's a dumb move considering some people wanted minimalism in their homes. Less is sometimes more.

At this point doesn't everyone already have at least one device that plays DVDs?

Doesn't bother me, but that's mainly because my DVD collection is in the teens... I tend to watch films when they come on TV. There may be reasons I don't buy the Wii U, but that isn't one of them.

Same. I don't really have time for films aside from whatever's on cable/satellite at any given time, so i wouldn't really have use for it, and i don't own a single Blu-Ray (and neither does my family)

dvd playback wouldn't make any sense at all since everyone has a device to play dvd's today, but blu-ray would help sales

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

By the time the Wii U releases everyone who wants a DVD player will already have a working DVD player, Blu-Ray players will be available for (around) $50 to $75 and most of the people who care about Blu-Ray will have already bought in, and Netflix will slowly be climing to be the #1 way people watch movies. In other words, there is really no value in including support for Nintendo, and if they design the system to be physically incompatible it makes piracy more difficult.

Man, I have so many unwatched DVDs or DVDs that I've only watched once, that it's ridiculous. I only have about twenty Blu-Rays and 90% of them are kids movies that came with a DVD which my kid watches on her DVD player in her room. The rest are just DC Comics animated movies.

As long as the Wii U has Netflix, I'm cool......and even if it doesn't, I have five fucking devices that already have that feature--and three of them are connected to the same TV!!

Can't really say I care.

Besides, everyone should have expected this. Nintendo is not trying to push blu-ray like Sony is. Nor are they really trying to compete with multi-media features against Sony like MS is.

They have little reason to want to add that support. Blu-ray playback will be one of the least important features for consoles next gen.

If 3DTVgains popularity your assumption could end up being way off.

Blurays won't be as expensive, not to mention you can grab one for $1.50 at Redbox right now.

Netflix doesn't stream 3D nor is it's HD the same overall quality as that found on a BD disc.

I am sure BD will continue to have its uses within the next 3-5 years easy.

3DTV isn't going to gain popularity though... not unless it gets rid of the glasses.... and even then... it might not take off since 3D actually has a lot of presentation negatives due to it basically screwing up how movies should be directed.

I don't care if it does or not have DVD/BR playback, already got a PS3 for BR/DVD.
