Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Nintendo always going to be behind Microsoft and Sony in graphics?

It's been their modus operandi for three consoles already to sell past gen hardware with gimmick at current gen prices.

What an excellent, inflamatory post!

Now, kindly leave your den under the bridge and go hop on the failboat.

First, let's assume that you mean home systems when you say consoles.  While it's true that Wii is much weaker than the PS3, the GC was more powerful than the PS2 and the N64 was more powerful than the PS1 (albeirt limited by storage medium).

If you mean home OR portable consoles, then... well... you are still wrong.  PS3 is more powerful than Wii, and PSP is more powerful than DS, BUT the GC was still more powerful than the PS2 and you said "three consoles".

I really don't understand the people saying "you can't go above 1080p" as if resolution was the only thing that makes graphics better.
They can improve a hell of a lot of stuff apart from resolution... like the pixelated textures, the foliage which most of the times is made of low res 2D crap, realtime global illumination, depth of field, ray tracing, they can use a way higher polygon count, way better animations and AI, realtime dynamic tessellation, way better particle effects, better AA... maybe even SSAA, 16x AF in all games, etc, etc, etc.

Have you people not seen UE3's Samaritan tech demo?
If next gen consoles can do that, they probably can't do it in 1080p (depending on when they release :P I may be wrong though), and it will still be a very big jump in graphics from PS3/Xbox 360, probably bigger than PS2 to PS3.

Even if resolution stays at 1280x720 for most games next gen like this one (highly doubt it), next gen games will look like CGI cutscenes compared to current games.

I don't think Nintendo will always be behind in graphics, look at stuff like the Gamecube, it had better graphics than the PS2... they could do that again someday.

A banner stolen from some site xD

Release Final Fantasy Versus XIII nowwwwwwwwww!!! lol :P

???  The Gamecube was on par with the Xbox as far as power, last gen.  The N64 was more powerful than the PS1 (only limited by its software format).  The DS was the most graphically advanced portable of all time when it launched, right?

Who knows, we still haven't seen any WiiU games played it.

well he could be thinking Wii, Ds and 3DS.  though to counter that the DS came out BEFORE the PSP so at the time it was the most powerful

either way its a very bad post

Gilga, I'll still love my PS3 even after I get my Wii U which I'm pretty sure is more than "on par" with it, just like I love my PC, Wii, 3DS etc. No reason to be insecure about it... =P I just want some fucking HD Zelda.

Lol @ "possibly on par with PS360" You are basing that off - I can only assume - the tech demoes shown at E3 with a year before the release of the console, comparing them to the best graphics produced on the PS3 to date.

Perfect Dark 0, a fairly well respected launch title for the 360.

And a tech demo. Inevitably, the final game will be much more polished

Is this really going to happen? It's like the xbox is more powerful than Wii bullshit again, except even more preposterous this time

Some things I want everybody to consider.

Stop assuming that the Wii U is only on par with the PS360.

From what we've  been led to the WIi U will use a Power 7 derived cpu and a comparable gpu to not cause a bottleneck. The Power 7 is IBM's top line architecture at the moment, and is significantly better than comparable intel core i7s. That means the cpu is derived off of both modern technology, and depending on how many cores and how much clock speed is cut down the cpu should be anywhere from a few to many times that of the Xbox 360s Xenon for example. This is certainly not considered "on par."

Since the GPU must not bottleneck the CPU expect something comparable to the Radeon R700 series. Also significantly more powerful than anything you can find in the HD twins.

So it's not going to be 'on par' unless you're expecting very unrealistic and expensive advancements for the other next generation consoles if they're released within a year of the WIi U.

I think it's fair to say that there is a difference between the PS360 and Wii U, and it will be a significant one at that.

Now that isn't to say that the other consoles won't be more powerful than the Wii U. Chances are very high that will be the case. However; will it  be comparable to that of this generation? Probably not.

I think the difference will be akin to that between the Dreamcast to Xbox at most, and the PS2 to Xbox at least.

Great post man, great post.

Too bad most people don't have this level of knowledge, but I wasn't expecting them to try anyway.

its a lost cause when there are still a vast number of people that think the ps2 was the most powerful system

i swear at least once a day you can find a post of someone correcting someone on that fact.  its soo sad
