I'm supposed to be reviewing Soul Sacrifice, but after playing it for like five hours or so (probably less), I just can't force myself to pick it back up.

The gameplay is solid, sure, and the writing it outstanding, but I've never seen such a well made game be so un-engaging. they put so much work into the lore and backstory but then relegated it all into reading datalogs. you don't FIND these beasts, you don't hunt them down, it's just a series of battles. it's Final Fantasy XIII all over again. Why do I care about these people? What's special about your player character? why can't I move or explore or, yu know, DO anything. what's wrong with shopping for items, exploration, etc. Ragnarok Odyssey was pretty simple and straightforward, but at least that had a PATH that CULMINATED in a boss fight or something. This is just "select a scene from a menu, be dropped into the middle of the fight, and good luck!"

That is not fun.

Collecting spells for sacrifice can be fun, yes, and accumulating things to combine and improve is good, and upgrading one's character is fine, but as mentioned, I've never seen a game so well made be so unengaging...aside from Final Fantasy XIII, and you all know what I felt about that game.

And yet it makes perfect sense for this game. Since you're reliving the book entries (diary entries).

That doesn't matter. He'll penalize it for not being what he wants, and not base it on the fact it's a monster hunting game with an actual story.

and like every other game in existence, you learn more about your characters as the story unfolds. Not sure how you didn't care about Sortiara though. I cared deeply about a character and that was just about 1.5 hours in.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

wait, what? Sacrificing monsters also replinishes your offering? Didn't realize this 0_0. I am Devine right now and rarely sacrifice. I even had an assassin sent after me because they think I am a bad Sorcerer HAHAHA XD

You didn't know that? I just played the demo and even I found that out. just shows how awful a job they did getting players up to speed with how the game mechanics works/flows.

I disagree. I hate how nowadays games hold yoru hand. Soul Sacrifice is a bit more complicated and requires players to figure some things on their own, which in my opinion is quite refreshing.

ditto this. A game should give you the basics and let you discover the nuances by yourself. Experimentation is how you get good in a game such as this. No one told me about the Skillful Attacks, i figured that out on my own.

I like how not every enemies weakness is obvious either. You can't just color match every red tinted enemy with a corresponding element.

I suppose it showed that Sony was willing to put a big project on Vita. That way they can attract some of the monster hunting fanbase.

Yeah, but that's what I mean.  I don't really know if there's any overlap between the kind of people who buy hunting games and the kind of people who buy visual novels/otaku JRPG's.

Either way I'm pleased, it's good to have them on board.  Just seemed like a weird sentiment.

I think it takes less time to DL stuff directly to Vita than it does to transfer from PS3 :/

It does, which is retarded.

i know. Plus, the Vita requires a constant internet connection to transfer to any device. I say just cut out the middle man and DL from store.

I guess PS3 is only really a viable option if you're on a capped internet service.

So I see it's all been kicking off over Soul Sacrifice. So far I'm not sure the game is for me. But it really is a remarkable piece of work. I'd love an OST for it. I think people complaining at the lack of open worlds are misplacing their expectations of the game. It really is a boss rush and about the complexities of the battle rather than the journey of getting to them.

I picked up Retro City Rampage seeing as it was half price (thanks to whoever posted about the 50% off discount!) is it me, or is the game very ADHD and hectic? I can't work out wtf is going on so far haha. Not saying that's a bad thing, but it really does feel like a trip atm!

Soul Sacrifice
Prices: £7.99/€9.99

Or you could listen to it on youtube ;).

Also for anyone intrested there is a rather big sale going on on the eu psn. No vita stuff unfortunalely but the psp gta games are on sale (those can be played on the vita a i think) and there's lots of stuff for the ps3 (ni no kuni and more).

Good spot. Though I want it on a pressed CD if its over a fiver lol. (Not a digital fan tbh) may have to make an exception for that!

Ni No Kuni is £20. Definitely worth a punt!
