Forums - Gaming - Call of Duty: Elite users get exclusive web TV series

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-01-cod-tv-series-for-call-of-duty-elite

Those who subscribe to Call of Duty: Elite, the social networking, stat-tracking service for the gargantuan first-person shooter series, get exclusive access to a Call of Duty web TV series.

"We have engaged some top Hollywood talent to create linear video content that will be exclusive to Elite members," Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg told the Guardian. "That content is inspired by Call of Duty."

He continued: "If you're a sports fan, there are lots of ways for you to connect with that hobby, that passion, not just on the day that the games are played, but throughout the week, and we wanted to give [Call of Duty players] real entertainment value."

Details on the web TV series are scarce. As the Guardian points out, it is unknown whether it's animated or live-action. "We're not going to give much more detail until we have something to show," Hirshberg offered. "That'll be later in the year."

Activision announced the Beachhead-developed Call of Duty: Elite yesterday. Parts are free. Parts require a monthly fee. Eurogamer explained Call of Duty: Elite's innards.

An open beta launches in the summer, before final rollout alongside Modern Warfare 3 in November.

That's pretty crazy, but I think it's a sound idea. If Activision can engage their players even more, they're helping the brand stay alive and avoiding the Guitar Hero-milking scenario. If it works of course.

Wouldn't this stuff get uploaded on Youtube eventually for everyone to see anyways?

I mean shit what isn't uploaded onto Youtube these days.

If anyone does get it up on youtube in proper quality, then I think Activision will have it removed faster than you can say "copyright claim".

Mirror it, then upload it.

No copyright claim will manage to get that off.

Again, it depends on somebody being able to get it in proper quality in the first place.

And even if it is put on the web, won't there still be plenty of people who pay the subscription for Elite? I think having this web series at your disposal when ever you like, with the most up to date content is just something to sweeten the deal, and will help make more people, who are on the fence about Elite, subscribe to the service.

They'll get it... don't they always?

While lots of people will pay for Elite anyway, this'll kill this incentive.

I don't know, until we know how Activision deals with the issue, it's hard to say.

And I doubt this incentive will be killed by piracy. Out of over 20 million potential customers, you're saying that everyone of them pirates TV series?

Since most of them are teens, I expect piracy through the roof.

It's not like there are better reasons that you'd get Elite for anyway.

Sony is offering all of the features elite is offering currently for uncharted 3 free of charge they have also go ahead of call of duty split screen by allowing dual PSN logins for online, also Naughty Dog's last mutliplayer performance with uncharted 2 was an experiment but it was executed so well and was an real enjoyment to play for hours.

If i was an call of duty fan i would demand from elite:

- dedicated servers

- Game to not be broken for the first few months and completely unbalanced

- own elite members only lobbies and matchmaking (paying customers)

- ban hammer being thrown around

- Removal of all sub 15 year olds, oh wait that 90% of cod's user base, that cant happen.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

And you know this because..?

You seem to be making a lot of assumptions about both Call of Duty players and Elite. Activision only just revealed Elite, how do you know that we know everything about it?

And even if there are say 15 million Call of Duty players who are teenagers, don't you think they would pay for Elite with the right incentives? Many already pay for Xbox Live, so it's not like they wouldn't be able to get the money.
