I'm keeping my powder dry. I hear the upcoming site update will add a mobile forum, and I intend to spam the crap out of it with game threads and sales data.

You can't, didn't you get the memo?

Most of those "Sales" aren't really sales because the downloads are free.

By the way, why wait for VGC to finally get around to giving us an area to talk about mobile games? They already took too long. We should have been having game threads already.

VGC Official Zenonia 3 Thread coming up in June!!!

I want all those threads in the mobile section, not the cluttered up gaming section. Simple as that. Then the few who care about mobile games can easily find them, and all the people who want to pretend mobile gaming is irrelevant can keep ignoring them.

And I know you're being facetious with your sales comment, but the truth is that there is very little data to be had on software unit sales anyway. But there's plenty of data on hardware sales, platform sales, and app store revenue! I just wish somebody out there would publish data on how much mobile advertising is worth...

Mobile section better have a seperate sales section.

I don't want my game discussions cluttered with sales stuff. :/

I want to talk Zenonia characters builds, PVP records and how to get the AI to stop cheating in Robotek HD.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

By the way, I hope VGChartz is also implementing Tapatalk functionality.

This site sucks big time on mobile devices. Tapatalk is a MUST.

Oh, all right. I don't wanna be a party pooper. I guess I can keep posting mobile sales threads in the sales forum.

Please do, lol.

Sales crap has infected every forum section. It would be nice to at least have one section left where we only talk about the games, strategy, and other things gamers should be talking about.

What do you want to know about mobile advertising, exactly?

Probably wants and idea of how much money is being made on advertising within games, since it tends to be the reason why so many titles on Android are either FREE or just $0.99.

I went to buy Eternal Legacy HD (a jrpg) for Android on Gameloft's website (only $2.50) and there was some sort of error when I hit confirm when I tried to pay via paypal. Grr. I don't wanna give my credit card details to Gameloft if I don't have to. The PSN debacle made me paranoid and it seems like the hackers are hacking other gaming companies right now.

Also after reading Gameloft's FAQ I found out that Gameloft's DRM is pretty batshit annoying ala the Wii. Apparently you're only allowed up to three years to re-download the games you purchased and in order to re-download games onto a new Android phone (if you wanna upgrade in the future) you have to contact Gameloft directly and provide them with your payment details. So basically I'd be effectively renting the game for 3 years instead of actually buying it (apparently Gameloft DRM doesn't let you physically transfer the games yourself from phone to phone and you can't back them up. So if I go get a new phone in 3 years, I pretty much don't own the games anymore and I'm SOL).

Why the hell doesn't Gameloft just put up all their games on Android Market like everyone else? This is horseshit. They have Modern Combat 3 (no interest in that. If I wanted to play Modern Warfare, I'd play it on my Xbox 360 or PS3) and some other stuff on Android Market but not Eternal Legacy HD and the Dungeon Hunter games (which is what I'm interested in).

Estimating that is a difficult proposition. You can't simply multiply the number of downloads by a number, because it would be the wrong metric.

To figure out ad revenue, one would need to know what the install rate is for a given game, and what retention is (e.g. how many people that installed still play it). Once that was done, you could make an educated guess on CPM, and arrive at a good answer.

Unfortunately, there's no way to track install rate as far as I know.

For starters, just how much revenue is the in-app mobile ad market worth annually? And how does it compare to revenue from direct purchases?

Actually, I might have answered my own question while digging up old stories for this post. Carefully re-reading Gartner's estimate of 2010's mobile app revenues (they say $5.2 billion) reveals that they're including both purchase and ad revenues. A report from IHS tallies up the top four app stores and estimates $2.2 billion in sales.

So factor in all the smaller fish (GetJar, Cydia, newcomers like Windows Phone and Amazon's Appstore), and we can see that mobile ad revenues might be roughly equal to purchase revenues.

I'm sure the margins of error wrap around the block, but its a better impression than I had this morning.

Apologies to Euphoria for all the moneytalk.
