Forums - Nintendo - Will Nintendo cut the price of the 3DS before the end of 2011?

It's common knowlegde that Nintendo purposely priced the 3DS a lot higher than they would have done normally (before this current gen), because they learned their lesson from Wii's launch, when it was sold out for ages and they could've made a ton more money had they priced it higher.

So, Nintendo *could* easily lower 3DS' price and still make a healthy profit. Whether they'll do that remains to be seen, too early to tell now. If sales remain below expectations after more compelling software comes out (stuff like Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, whatever) and/or NGP poses a real threat later on, they probably will. For now, no-one knows. Imo if NGP comes out at a competitive pricepoint, Nintendo will lower 3DS' price, no sweat.

The problem with Nintendo's claim is they are selling fewer systems that way, which means the tons more money has been cancelled out.

The selling out fallacy doesn't take into account how many systems are being sold out or how many systems are left on the shelves if they aren't sold out.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

If sales don't pick up before the NGP launches, then yes, I think they'll drop the price on the thing.

They should cut it atleast $50 before the NGP is out.

It's just that simple.

Nintendo has been doing this "Gaming Thing" for a few years now. I think they know what they are doing.... *eye rollz*

Im not waiting for I price cut, unless it is a big cut. I'll probably just wait until the next version of the 3DS, hopefully with a better battery life

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

IMO the 3DS is too expensive atm, it costs more than a PS3. A price cut would definitely send it into first place.

Sorry but, can you tell me where? As far as I know the cheapest PS3 is about 300 euros/dollars.

OT. They will do a price cut it before Wii2 launches to have some "gap" between them.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

I don't think they will cut the price.  I believe that Nintendo believes it's software will do the job sufficiently. While I agree that software is the real answer I don't know if it's the type of software Nintendo is producing nowadays.  With 3D Zelda,3D Mario and Star Fox being thier big hitters it reminds of N64/Gamecube stuff and we know how well that software lifted hardware.

If the NGP starts at $250, and 3DS sales don't take off leading up to and immediately after Black Friday, there would be good reason for Nintendo to drop the price to $199 to spur sales.

At $199, that would still be a 100% profit off the BOM. Given the low production cost of the 3DS, Nintendo has a huge amount of adjustment room as far as MSRP goes.

Ideally, it would be the release of key Nintendo IPs and third party releases that have the same effect without having to adjust the price, but it would also seem unlikely that Nintendo didn't have a price drop as a part of a contingency plan if supply/production easily matches and even outstrips demand over the holiday season.

Either that or they'll try some sort of holiday bundle package to increase the perceived value.

The best option for nintendo would be to price cut the infernal machine already!

I'm sure they're already profitting anyway and the ngp could mean some serious competition
