i don't see any names in that article ... sounds like anonymous to me.  i mean c'mon, operation payback?!?

well now, you seem pretty anonymous to me too kitler53 unless that's your real name.

Operation Payback was Anonymous's DDoS/Dox attack on Sony and its employees. Phantom coincided their credit card grab with it.

let's just say this.  i have no clue who phaotom is.  honestly, a year ago i didn't know who anonymous was either.  and as far as m30wca7As7r0ph3 goes, forget about.  i don't actually care either.  i (and frankly a vast majority of the population) only understand 1 word ... hacker.  this really doesn't change my outlook in any way as it is roughtly the equivant of saying al qaeda didn't do it, it was hamas.

but hey, i'm glad you feel better about yourself.  i still hate anon for the record.

Well, I hope you never use a NO CD crack, jailbreak your Iphone or android, WP7.  Never download any movies, TV shows, music that you did not purchase.  Using anything that allowed you to use a device, OS that was not originally intended.  I see people make statements like yours everyday only to find out they are using the gifts the hackers have provided them.

NO CD crack - Nope

jailbreak your Iphone or android, WP7. - Nope

download any movies, TV shows, music that you did not purchase. - illegal, immoral, and nope.

Using anything that allowed you to use a device, OS that was not originally intended - nope.

i follow rules simply because it is the right thing to do not just due to fear of consequence.

Very well stated

i'm a better person than that, i follow rules simply because it is the right thing to do not just due to fear of consequence.

Well, it is the idea of using things as they were not originally intended, that leads to innovations and breakthroughs, and new technology.  LittleBigPlanet was taken places not intended, because of this.  Post-It notes came about as a result of a failed glue being repositioned.  Over and over again history is filled with this.  The issue is WHY you are doing it, and to what end.  Not understanding this will mean not understanding why people do hacking.  It isn't just to get free IP, it is to come up with new stuff.  Well, unless you want to merely be a corporate lackey that consumes whatever they belch out from the bowels of product development.  As a person who does game design, I reposition products all the time.

Anyhow, I think a greater question is: to what end is this repositioning being done?  I believe that is a more mature view of things, than the one of being a good trooper that merely follows marching orders and don't look at things differently.  Conformity isn't always the right answer.

wow, so many replies to that post.

okay, first off that last line was pretty much to piracy part.  as rocketpig said, legal is legal.  to this i have a very very high horse.  i don't pirate.  i don't even make copies of friends CDs even though it would be so very easy to.  i want to do the right thing, i want to support those that make the content i want to consume.

innovation, repositioning things isn't a bad thing but you have to give the appropriate credit when credit is due.  for example, i work for a software company.  we have done some really cool things but at the foundation of our software is mathmatical algorithum another entity researched, tested, and refined.  I'm fine with our repositioning of their work because we pay to this very day pay them royalties for making use of their work.

i think that is at the heart of why i have such a bad opinion of hackers/homebrewers.  not all, but a lot of what they do isn't their work but really someone elses.  for instance, a friend of mine modded his wii to play dvds.  there is no denying that a wii could play dvds but the difference is nintendo doesn't pay the licence fee to allow that.  ms/sony do.  that's the legality of it, and to me and my over-developed sence of right and wrong, that's also the morality of it.

not that all hacks are illegal or even immoral or unjust, the kinect hacks were cool and even endorced and encouraged by MS.  linux is a really cool concept.  unfortuntly, the most common use of hacking  is to bypass software protections in order to gain access to content.

anyways, we're really far off topic.

now i know what this situation reminds me about! it was the day when big Fazeek did NOT steal Modnation Racers and he proved it!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

I have a strong suspicion that the only reason a lot of members pretended to care about the hackers at all was, because they could use it as a smoke screen, or a change the subject defense. Basically they cared only for the curtain they could use to cover up Sony's abject failures. Not for the persons that were behind that curtain. The same holds true for making scapegoats out of Anonymous as a whole. The fact that this thread isn't getting more traction is pretty damning proof that it was all about defending Sony rather then a legitimate greivance against the criminals.

By the way I find it interesting that a group is taking credit, and the obvious responsibility for the attack. That shows a very real lack of fear on their part. They are really unimpressed by Sony, or criminal prosecution. Talk about a real sense of Sony being impotent. Were they this good, or was Sony just using crap hardware/software.

Thinking about it, that would work perfectly with the .txt file. If they planned their attack with the DDoSing by anonymous it would be super easy to drop that in there, and walk away unscathed

Sig thanks to Saber! :D

The Kinect hacks were actively discouraged by Microsoft. In fact MS said they couldn't be done.

It was only once the Kinect had been well and thoroughly hacked that MS acquiesced.

"making scapegoats out of Anonymous"

since you appear to know so well who did it then? and wheres the evidence that anon didn't do it? oh yeah...

I feel like some are 'trying' to make it seem as if people were pissed off at anon or hackers in general to defend sony...well fudge that, people think such hackers to be pathetic and annoying losers since they by the banner of fighting for consumer rights just gets in the way of them. they are the scum of the earth and those who are supporting them seems to be doing so mainly because of blind fanboy hatred towards a company which in this instance turned out to be not their own favorite one. people like that are no better in my books.

anywho I find great amusement in rage some of their fans are displaying across various forums and websites these days...sad but amusing
