Also, I can't forget the time when a staff member at GAME told another customer that Nintendogs didn't exist and that she must have been thinking of 'Nintendo's Dogz'.  I find it hard to believe that anybody at any gaming store would deny the existance of Europe's best selling  DS game (12.42m atm).  That takes gaming ignorance to a whole new level.

Ouch. That's pretty bad. How about when our store told us NSMBWii didn't exsist and the biggest Wii holiday game was Left 4 Dead 2? That's pretty igorant, but not as bad as your example.

Maybe we, being gaming addicts/enthusiasts, know far more than the staff, who in turn know far more than Joe/Jill Bloggs? Maybe it just sees like they're bias and/or ignorant because we are all slightly (or massively) bias towards one particular company/console, so when we see someone trying to push something else, we immediately retaliate?

It doesn't explain most of the things in the thread, but since we know pretty much everything about the game we're going to buy, it's obvious that they'll seem stupid.

There isn't a store in North America that would rather sell a ps3 game over a 360 one.

Lolz that isn't true I tried telling people the PS3 is the better option in most cases unless it just runs that terribly IE Bayonetta.

Anyway it's all about knowing your customer, tell them all the options, tell them about the games, and then wait and see which one they would rather have.  As sales suggest our biggest demographic was the Wii owner, our most noticeable demographic was actually the really apparent 360 fans o_O some of those guys need some help, they actually talk like internet trolls like what they say is true Sony fans were fewer and far between cause those guys jumped ship to 360 after last gen... which would explain why they were the crazy ones... the PS2 fans in my area were pretty damn crazy...

Also like Rol said it's not just about the online features though that is a big point PS3 and 360 differ on, most people that pick PS3 do it because there's more exclusives to that console now, and most 360 exclusives were early gen stuff... so the quality is pretty questionable... and now more and more multiplat games are starting to run better on the PS3... so those are all factors that someone should inform a customer on.

They're salesmen.  They seem to have a good idea what the "popular" thing is.  I may go in there to buy something like Alan Wake and they'll try to get me to buy Call of Duty.  I guess they are beneficial to the casual gamer but for somebody that does their research and knows what they want, they're virtually useless.

The thing is, they have about 5 minutes to figure out what kind of gamer you are, what you might be interested in, and how to shill accesories, subscriptions, memberships, etc. on you in that short amount of time.  Even if these guys have that kind of knowledge, odds are that they won't have the kind of personality to charm you into parting with your money and they'll just come off as douchebags.

As long as my salesperson acts like the game I bought is going to be the best game I ever played, offers some sort of intelligent critique, or doesn't insult my intelligence, I'm happy.  I'll deal with that person time and time again because shopping doesn't turn into some sort of awkward social experience (ie: the time the guy in Lennox Mall in Atlanta, Ga made me feel like a loser because I wouldn't pre-order GeoW3 for the Beta).

There was also the time back in 2006, when I had pre-ordered a copy of LEGO Star Wars II for GC.  When I came into the store on release day to collect my copy, I was told that the store had only ordered PS2 copies of the game, they had enough, just all for the PS2.  They offered me a PS2 copy or they could order a GC version from another store, which could take up to a week.  Considering I had a PS2, with hindsight I probably should have just taken the PS2 copy, but at the time I wasn't exactly desperate and I was a stubborn 14 year old, so I decided to wait until my GC copy arrived about 5 days later.

That's not the online time they've cocked up concerning my pre-orders.  Twice they've understocked a title and sold my pre-ordered copy (Timesplitters 3 and Super Mario 64 DS).  At least on those occasions they gave me a gift card equal to the value of the game.

haha I know that place, haven't been there in forever though... in all honesty if you start talking like you've worked at a game store before they turn off the saleman pitch and just start acting casual (I mean I did but no one ever checks to see if what I say is true) once they start acting more casual they'll also be nicer and treat you with more intelligence, just a tip.

This reminds me of April 2009.  It was an inset day and the day Little King's Story came out in Europe and I decided to buy a copy (due to the fact I wasn't that interested in the game until all the fantastic reviews came in, I didn't place a pre-order).  The woman at the cashier said to me 'I assume you're buying this game for a younger sibling', I couldn't be arsed with the whole thing so I took the easy option and just agreed.  She then said 'I thought so, no 'gamer' above the age of 9 would buy a Wii game, in particular this one'.  I didn't even think GAME staff could sink that low.

The box cover makes it look like it is a kiddie game.  Of course it isn't, but an uninformed clerk will presume it is, and make a comment they think is helpful.  Add in the presumption that the Wii is for kids, and you get that comment.  The clerk likely views themselves as a "gamer", so she wouldn't have a clue what it is about.

That's pretty harsh. It's a great game, it just goes to show how un-informed the staff are :/

A good salesperson tries to qualify the interests and wants of the person they are selling to and position the proper fit among what they have, in order to get repeated sales and generate loyalty.  In other words, they listen to their customers, and position their products correctly in the mind of customers.  A partisan in the console wars won't do that.  They are on a mission to persuade people to their console of choice, and ignore the reality of the situation.  They score if more people buy the console and the games they choose, irregardless of what the customer really wants.  Due to the low wages individuals are paid at Game Stop, this type is who they get.  In addition to throwing other stuff on.

And yes, there will be sales quotas and so on that stores will run.  So, you go into Gamestop and you get the other stuff, like the power up card (whatever it is) and fanboy bias.
