The guy who returned the phonebook was probably counting on the stores being busy because of the Christmas season, and the clerk being too busy to take the proper precautions. As much as people might want to call the clerk lazy it really represents a failing of management because stores should have adequate staff to prevent that level of busyness and the staff should be trained to follow procedure regardless.
I bet it was an EB games employee who stole it. People who work for gamestop and all those places will "borrow" new games and consoles, take them home, play them for awhile, then try to sell them as "display" items. Its a big reason why I try not to shop at those places.
oh poor boy thats why i always check if its in before i buy it
N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!
bet with *no one yet* that the combined first week of Monster Hunter 3 in america and europe will be 600k or more! winner changes looser sig and avatar for two months!
Defiantly a customer who has swapped the items over and returned it for a refund.
It’s not even that difficult, as a lot of shops don't do any other checks other than making sure the box isn't damaged. I personally could have done this several times but haven’t.
Whilst most people wouldn’t have the minerals to do something as risky as taking a box back with a phone book in it (due to the fear of getting court out) There are a lot more people who will happily buy a new DS for example and replace it with their old DS with a duff screen and take the new box back to the shop with the old DS in for a refund.

I didn't think that's allowed...opening a box before you've bought it...

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release. (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
Yeah, when I returned my ps3 for a new one(I set the video to HDMI and couldn't get the default settings back. I read through the manual but must have missed the part about resetting it by holding down the button.) I accidentally left the controller recharger cord out. whoops.

That is nothing. There is a place where I live that takes used trade-ins if the trade-in is in excellent condition no scratches, etc. They reseal the game and sell it as new. I know cause they did it to my friend he knows guys in the stores and they sealed it in front of he and I. Then, put it right up on the shelf.
Reminds me of the guy who returned the outside shell of the 360 with a text book inside after stealing the innards.
| NJ5 said: That's what happens when some smartass steals a PS3 by returning a phone book inside the PS3 box he bought, gets his/her money back, and the store employees don't check if the box contains everything it should contain. The box then gets sold to another customer who is screwed unless he does the same thing (silently returning the phone book and getting the money back). It's a pretty old trick, but it seems that stores still fall for it! Customers should always check the contents of the box when buying it. I mean inside the store, in front of the employee, it's the only way of being sure that you won't get screwed. |
The reason people get away with this is because the stores that don't fall for it, and catch the guy, fail to detain him and call the police to have him arrested.
