Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will future PS and Xbox controllers have more buttons?

Yeah, I suspect they will.

The 720 controller will be based off Kinect, but will quite possibly have some fairly standard controller with some buttons.

The PS4 controller will be based off move, but the left hand controller will possibly have more buttons.

I think that, for the most part, what we have is what we get.  With the exception of the "Guide" button, we haven't seen too much difference in controllers since the PS1 days.  Maybe those buttons can do a little mor (like the analog triggers on the Dreamcast or the "Click" of the Gamecube controller) but I think we've hit the sweet spot a long time ago.

Functionality could improve (microphones, cameras, video screens, audio speakers, motion control--which have all been done before, btw) but I don't think anybody wants to add more buttons.

I DO wish there was a button to switch between porn and video games on my PS3.  That way, I would be able to come up with a plausible lie when my girlfriend walks in the room and my pants are down.

Maybe like the onlive controller?

Yes, yes they will.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

i would want to add 1 or 2 more face buttons but no more shoulder buttons

games like uncharted 2 for example would benefit form another face button b/c you could assign roll and cover to 2 different buttons now there on one so sometimes when i roll i go to cover even though i didnt want that to happen

God forbid. It's too much as it is.

I already have more buttons - Razer Onza Tournament Edition :p

I think they should remove the L2 and R2 and add a multitouch pad on the back. This could work as an alternative to L2/R2, or used for 1:1 instant aiming, grabbing/moving items in the game, selecting stuff, etc. the rest of the buttons should stay they same.

They could add a mic and camera in every controller for video chat without accessories. If they wanted to get really advanced, they could have the back touch pad simulate the texture of in-game surfaces (adding a new sensory dynamic).

Adding stuff like front touch surfaces would interfere with game play as you would have to let go of the face buttons and/or analog sticks. Motion controls haven't been well mixed with traditional controls by game developers, though IR aiming has done well. Full body motion hasn't been mixed with regular controllers because it glues your hands together. And controlling a game with your mind is still not feasible.

Not sure what else they could try, but i hope they don't try mixing controls they interfere with one another (it can really make game play awkward).

I really hope not, they already have too many IMO

All we need is another Atari Jaguar controller

God forbid!

OT. Oh no! I can't use the 4 shoulder buttons some controllers have at the same time, it's just akward. They should reposition some them to the front (the Genesis contoller had 6 front buttons and no one complained).

Please excuse my bad English.
