I would say the 360 is on track to be successful, a lot of people are saying that it is finally making money for MS or is about to and the software lineup is healthy in terms of quality and sales. It can also be seen as a success as it looks to eclipse the original in hardware sales in the next 1 or 2 years (assuming sales remain at the steady pace they are right now, which based on the sales from launch seemed to show that) which means that it's taken half the time the original did to reach the originals total.
You could also say it's successful relative to it's original target the PS3 (since no one saw the Wii coming) seeing as how both consoles enjoyed similar sales in their first year on the market, with the year advantage, puts the 360 in a good spot.
