this is stupid

our goverment shouldnt be giving money for this type of stuff.

for games, painters, movies or anything. stop wasting our money. if "art" cant survive without these grants, then they dont deserve to stay around.

our goverment needs to stop picking winners and losers, thats not capitalism.

Endowments are provided by other people. People donate to the NEA, and is given to other people who show talent. Get it? It's like american idol. Rich guy pays money to find talented people, and then supports them.

the article makes it sound like the government is giving out these grants, which im against no matter what it is. whether its art, energy efficient windows, subsidising ethonal, subsidising that material that WWII unimforms where made out of, whatever. government should pick favorites, choosing winners and losers.

if this is private donors, i have nothing against it, but if it is from private rich people giving, then why does our government have to recognize it as art

While I don't want to start a political skirmish, I must say that your stance on subsidies is far too black and white. Subsidies are proven, they make sense, and they work. The problem is that the government doesn't do enough to clamp down on the loop-holers. Similarly to the top 1% that don't pay nearly in taxes what they are supposed to pay due to loopholes, the best example comes from farming subsidies. I believe that farm subsidies, specifically corn, should end, or change.

However, subsidies are a great way to help bring certain things to sustainable levels. Like energy efficiency, or alternative energy like solar panels, the problem with the pricing is that the manufacturer hasn't reached a level of demand where the costs could greatly drop. However, for a lot of these energy alternatives, it is proven that they will ONE DAY have that demand, but really only when gas has reach like 8-10$ per barrel, then the demand wil go up, and the price will come down. Right now, solar panels and similar tech could be produced for the price the gasoline goes for, and we CAN get that relief either now, or when gas is double what it is now.

Bottom line is that for those technologies that could be producing at a very marketable level NOW, subsidies makes sense. The people who infringe and take advantage of subsidies give it a very bad name, and make people dislike it in general.

I will agree that subsidies are out of control.

i agree, we should definitely eliminate loop-holes/ people from all tax brackets (especially from rich ones) take way to much advantage of these. we need to simplify out tax code, get rid of deductions, loop holes, exemptions, etc. and lower tax rates for every one.

but for subsidies, thats different. thats the government taking your money and giving it to someone else. meaning chosing winners and losers. thats not captalism. for things like alternative energy, im all for it. but right now most of it isnt viable alternative. if it was, the market would take care of it, and government wouldnt have to throw billions of dollars at it. the market chooses whats right for consumers, goverment doesnt. government creates artificial prices, and takes away jobs from other sources, that are proven. the day that solar, wind or whatever energy becomes an ecinomical alternative, trust me there will be thousands of people wanting to get a slice of the pie. the market determines when that comes. and ironically enough its also goverment that keeps us from being energy independent, and keeps us from using alternative energy. we cant drill our own oil, we cant make solar fields in the middle of the dessert, we cant make wind farms, miles of our coasts, and we cant make nuclear plants, all because of politicians. when government interfers with the free market they stop advancement in everything, including energy

Just wondering: how do you feel about the government giving money to poor families/individuals who can't sustain themselves (and perhaps their needed medications) due to mental illnesses, etc?

 Who the fk cares?!

Why do some gamers feel the need to justify their gaming hobby by trying to pass it off as art ?

I ask again, who the fk cares!?

Who needs anything to do with justification? I just want my passion to be as respected as other forms of media are. To me, gaming is something that can stand neck and neck with other forms of media in terms of craftmanship and artistic merit, so gaming gaining official recognition is good news, and something I care about.

I want games to be taken as seriously as books, movies and what have you, so this is a nice step in the right direction.

If someone wants gaming to be considered art so that others will take it seriously or respect it, I think that's trying to justify   it.

Who the fk cares what other people think about your gaming habits.

But anyways, art seems to be a subjective thing, so I guess I can't say wether it is art or not.

I just know i don't care.

I don't want gaming to be more respected so that my passion for gaming seems justified, I want gaming to be more respected so that I can better share it. Sharing is caring, and I really want to share my passion with the people around me, but it's not always easy if people don't take it seriously enough.

Plus I want to create games for a living, so people taking my craft seriously rather than dismissing it would be nice.

alternative energy could be sustainable and prominent industry if coal, nuclear, and oil weren't subsided. Since they are, might as well subsidize alternative energy production products. Without solar, wind, hydro, etc subsidies it cannot compete as strongly as it has against subsidized business. Truly I think all needs to end.

but i dont know to much about coal, oil, and especially nuclear being subsidized. but if they are it needs to stop.

but is Nuclear really subsidized, it seems most politicians try everything to stop the great form of energy.

America has such vast amounts of natural resources (oil, coal, natural gas, and wind and solar (duh)) its really really really stupid that we really on places like the middle east for our energy. there is no reason why we arent energy independent

It’s fairly unclear just how much the government pays out in subsidies, but Doug Koplow of Earth Track has done his best to conduct solid analysis. The results, to say the least, are not surprising.

  • The oil and gas industry currently receive $41 billion annually (adjusted for inflation).  This accounts for 52% of federal subsidies to the energy industry given out by our government.
  • Coal receives $8 billion annually, this brings the fossil fuel subsidies to roughly two-thirds of all energy sector federal subsidies.
  • Nuclear energy, although no new plants have been built in decades, account for $9 billion annually.  This goes towards currently running plants and waste management.  The simple fact is that nuclear power cannot succeed without subsidies.
  • Ethanol gets $6 billion, that’s not even accounting for the waste of food and rising food prices.
  • Renewable energy gets about $6 billion annually as well.  You can count on this number increasing in the coming years.

thats stupid. they could just tax us less, and let us keep our money, to spend it or save it however we see fit. but thats logic, something our government isnt very good at
