Less competition and more ad revenue.

That 'professional' review would be enough to force my old english teachers to commit suicide

Well I had a run in with the writers and staff at 1UP a few years ago when the Wii was launched. The staff was extremely anti-Nintendo and they didn't hide it. Staff members in interviews on G4 and such called the Nintendo GameCube a childrens play toy and insulted Nintendo for choosing the colour Purple.
Finally I had had it. So I wrote an article about the bias on 1UP. I talked about their journalistic integrity and how they are supposed to report the news without bias. I ended up getting the support of a few writers while the others got really offended and attacked Nintendo viciously. After I started in fighting with some staff taking on other staff I recieved a ban and the topic was taken down.
I was welcomed back a year ago, but the site was no longer much to look at. The forums were dead and the sites writers and staff were no where to be seen. The site no longer broke new news or got exclusives. Essentially 1UP was dead.
So 1UP being acquired by IGN is a good move for 1UP. Maybe IGN will do a better job running the site and possibly breath life back into its dead corpse!

I don't think 1up was at all competition for IGN. I am not sure how 1up is going to increase their margins much either, not without dumping some serious promotion into the site. We're talking the difference between a site which gets thousands of viewers to one which gets millions.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

IGN is a big site and the quality of their work is somewhat uneven. I usually like their Nintendo, portables, and Movies sections whereas the PC and PS3 coverage is often poorly written. I still unsure about the comics. I read a few good things in 1Up but most of their content is average at best. If anything, I like the fact they give grades instead of numerical scores in their reviews.
What I don't understand is why News Corp is doing that. I heard the plan to sell IGN, which makes sense, but I don't think they will aggregate much buying 1Up.
