Forums - Nintendo - Reggie talks about Cafe and Wii price Cut

Yes usually when Nintendo says sold they mean sold and if they mean shipped they tend to say shipped. I remember the story on the news and it was reported all over, even a quick google search had all the stories saying sold, not shipped.

Yes Yakuzaice I do know the difference between shipped and sold. I was going by Nintendo's own press release in which they said they sold 3.6 million units. I also haven't been online for a few weeks infact I think almost a month so I missed alot of the news during that time period.

I have been on gaming forums and discussing game sales for at least ten years. I am not an idiot.

Nintendo has always referred to what we call 'shipments' as 'sales'.  Now there is nothing wrong with that because they are sales for Nintendo, but there is no precedent for them saying sold to consumers in their earnings release.  Pretty much all of the information on their investor relations page refers to shipments as sales.  When they are talking about sold to consumers, they usually cite a source like NPD/GFK/etc.

Software sells hardware. The early launch period didn't really have much software but starting with the summer period, it's an all out barrage of heavy hitting software.

I just doubt that Zelda will be one of the killer apps. Not that you claimed so. Others have been insisting it, and if it wasn't a killer app for the N64 (Goldeneye was more of one), it won't be one for this system.

OoT wasn't a killer app on the N64?  Are you kidding me?  7.6 million in sales on a 33 million userbase?

That made it a hit game, not a killer app. Call of Duty sells a lot, but it doesn't tend to give the PS3 and 360 sales boosts (at least not huge ones like with Monster Hunter on PSP and Nintendogs on the DS). These kinds of games tend to sell to the existing customers.

N64 hardware jumped 763% the week Ocarina of Time was released doubling Playstation hardware sales for the week.

Did they stay that way, or was it a flash boost the way the 360 often got in Japan?

Yes, the following year was the N64`s highest selling year.

That's not quite what I asked. Where can I find the info on how much it sold and when?

I still can't believe you are trying to say the game with the highest aggragated rating in video game history was not a killer app.

Also, Yakuzaice is correct about the shipped/sold terminology.  All 3 console makers are required by law to report units sold to retailers, wholesalers, distributors, etc....and we know those figures as 'shipped'.    Now Nintendo does have an in house service called Siras that is a point of sale warranty tracking system but can be used to estimate sales but it's rarely used for that and they will state in the press release the figures are sold to consumers through internal tracking systems...they won't just say 'sold'.   When they say 'sold' by itself, it means shipped.

Hmmm... But A might not work anymore. I think they spend a lot more time than any of us researching the market. There conclusions might be wrong, but they certainly have more evidence to make a call than we do.

Except A never stopped working. Making mainstream games is A, and that had not stopped being a successful tactic. Making quirky games just to please themselves and reviewers is B, and that has never worked.

And just because you have evidence doesn't mean a company is somehow smarter. The US auto industry has suffered crashes twice in the past 50 years because they refused to stop doing what wasn't working.

But how to execute plan A changes. They couldn't just release another Wii Sports type game and have the same effect. They'd have to do something different and I suppose they ran out of ideas, so they're probably going to try to gain a hold on the PS3/360 market if they can.

It's not the worst plan they could come  up with. That is, unless they sell Project Cafe for $600 US without any games. Hopefully the 3DS launch was just a hiccup and not what they intend for Project Cafe!

I don't know, sometimes I feel that some guys in the forums believe that they are more inteligent than big corporations like nintendo, Sony or Microsoft. If nintendo says they expect to sell 16 millions 3ds in this fiscal year, I think they must have a plan. They are not idiots, They are businessmen. I think the 3DS is selling quite well for the software it has at the moment.

Nintendo missed their shipment projections on all three systems last quarter.  The Wii especially had its number adjusted down several times throughout the fiscal year.  That is why people have been pessimistic in regards to Nintendo's expectations.

Also, when a company does A and is successful, does B and is not successful, and continues to to B, the company actually is being dumber than those pointing out they should go back to doing A.

Hmmm... But A might not work anymore. I think they spend a lot more time than any of us researching the market. There conclusions might be wrong, but they certainly have more evidence to make a call than we do.

But it doesn't follow as Nintendo are still trying to make mainstream games - the Wii series is pushing out games as much as it can. I think people think its easy just to make a successful mainstream title. It isn't, especially a killer app.

They drop it because when the casual Wii owner buys a 2nd console, he becomes non-casual or hardcore. lol

And obv the Cafe will be Wiimoteplus compatible, i would bet my ass.
