I had this weekend a discussion with my friend about the launch of the new Mortal Kombat, and I was saying to him (Super) Street Fighter IV is still the best fighting game this generation (or perhaps of all time).

Like me he is a big fan of the first two Mortal Kombats, but for him the new game is fantastic and I disagree. For me the new Mortal Kombat has the same "locked" gameplay and most fatalities completely lost originality.

It seems that developers have not learned from past mistakes, or concurrent with the Street Fighter IV that showed a series of struggle can be revitalized for the better (much better).

Mortal Kombat is not a bad game, is the best MK in a long time, the problem is that I wanted something much better and was told the Street Fighter IV (my current favorite).

And what do you think? Am I being too critical? Or the new Mortal Kombat more disappointed than surprised?

Mortal Kombat > Street Fighter, and I love Street Fighter. MK remake is just out of this world.

If you're a fan of the first two MK's, MK9 shouldn't disappoint unless some of the new mechanics in the game ruined it for you.

SSFIV is pretty much an updated SF2. The game was  great already so it didn't need any major changes aside from some balance updates. It really showed that when gamers want a classic game remade for today's HD consoles, it'll be a success as long as you don't stray too far away from what made the original game so successful.

MK has never really been viewed as a viable "competitive" fighter, so they couldn't just "remake" the originals like they wanted to compete against SSFIV in that category. MK had much work needed to be done to be legit alternative to SSFIV. But really though, MK9 is easily the best of the series. If you don't like it, you're probably just bored of MK overall. Their goal wasn't to reboot the series into something different and unrecognizable - they wanted to go back to the roots of what made MK awesome, but in this day and age of violent games, fatalities just arn't enough for most people anymore. Then again, if the fatalities are a big reason you're playing the game, then you're probably playing it for the wrong reasons.

I love SSFIV but in terms of just playing for "fun", I still think MK9 is pretty awesome. SSFIV has just had so much of an impact in this gen as a fighting game that unless a new fighter is completely different from it (such as MvC3), it's gonna be compared to it, and usually lose.

Mortal Kombat will always be more accessible.

The new one is the only fighter that I'll need for the gen. Never understood the appeal behind street fighter.

And you gotta be shitting bricks if you deny that this is the best MK game ever.

I'm more disapointed with MK9 because it doesn't evolve over the first games... the had the same old problems... very slow, out of sync and lacking creativity.

I liked the game... it is good... but I want more than that.

I can't put my feelings in words... but I had a much better impression with SFIV than MK9... and I'm more a MK fan than SF fan. I guess I expected a lot from MK and so I'm disappointed.

I hope the online part change my mind (PSN come back to me).

Well i like street fighter but i didnt feel ssf4 was a huge step forward. I have only played mk9 and it feels like a better transition to me. But all in all i feel tekken 6 is the best lawl.

I haven't played the new MK, but IMO traditional fighters (ie not SSBBrawl) this gen go:

SSFIV > Blazblue > Tatsunoko vs Capcom > Marvel vs Capcom 3 > Soul Calibur 4

Mortal Kombat is awesome so far! I just found a blog that's giving out the preorder DLC for all the costumes, and the new Kenshi character DLC!

Tekken, SF is for genre fans and offers tons more depth.
