Forums - Gaming - Do console generations still make sense?

As you all know, Café is releasing in 2012. Rumours say that PS4 and 720 will release some time in 2014.

Now imagine this situation: in 2017, following a 5 year cycle, Nintendo releases Café2. But Sony and MS are just 3 years into the gen, and do not release a console until 2022, following an 8 year cycle again.

In 2022, 5 years after 2017, Nintendo happens to release Café3.

So, is Nintendo in the 10th generation while the others just started the 9th?

Is Café2 a 9th gen console or a second 8th gen console? Perhaps it can be called a mid-gen console to avoid confusion?

Or Sony and MS can be considered to have skipped a generation and jumped from 8th to 10th?

Or we can just stop talking about generations altogether.

What do you think? Do console generations still make sense?

You are still under the assumption that console generation will still be around that time. Which many feel won't be true in the end.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand you. You mean under the assumption that the next PS and XBOX will release in 2014?

If that's the case, you're right, it's just an assumpion, but if it were true, does it still make sense to talk about generations?

Even if they release in 2013 and then 2021, and Ninty goes from 2012 to 2018, the generations are kind of screwed up.

No, I meant that many believe the "consoles" will not exist, well not in this sense come 9th generation. However, this is the 6th generation nintendo console, and might as well be called the 8th generation.

you make some good points,It's kind of doesn't make sense the way you put it.

Yeah, they do, because if MS and Sony launch in 2014, 2 years after Cafe, PS5 and 1440 will simply not come to frution, much less be released in 2022.

They sorta never made sense.  In the past, they could be defined by hardware power (16-bit, 32-bit) but even then, there were always lesser known consoles launching all of the time. Sometimes, they'd even be a generation ahead, as far as power and still be part of a gen that started years before.

It's just another non-existent thing that we use to define a certain period in time.  There's no official rules, criteria, time span, or logic.

It makes sense right now, we still have to see how everything plays out for Sony and Microsoft with their reactions to Café. Maybe the term will be obsolete in the future, maybe it won't. Maybe we'll switch to cloud-based gaming and that will be the end of console generations as we know them. Who knows?

OK, I understand. It's just a supposition, though.

I don't think consoles will still be releasing by that day and age.  I think it is more than likely that video games will be considerably "revolutionized," not to mention, there is absolutely nothing to say that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo will still be in the videogames industry at that time.
