Forums - Sony Discussion - What people blaming Geohotz and the "hackers" seem to be missing...

Hey, Rocketpig!  What the hell are you doing on VGChartz all day?  Shouldn't you be drawing me some new Variables pages?

I'm also working on a completely new site, too. I think it will look a lot spiffier.

To think this all started with some Custom Firmware...

Who would've thought CFW would result into PSN data being compromised? :P

Who would've thought that Sony would go to war against hackers without taking measures against being hacked?

(Anyone who is familiar with Sony, of course.)

Badgenome, I've never figured it out...do you like Sony or hate them? lol

While I dont blame the hackers for this crap, although someone obviously got into Sony's servers and took some information.  I am not going to blame Geohot and all those other morons for this.

But what i dont get is placing the blame squarely on Sony for this. Sure there security wasnt the greatest and should have been better for the PSN servers.  But they werent the ones who broke into it and took information.   It would be like blaming a bank for a robbery that happened on a their vault that wasnt completely secure and ignoring the robbers who actually did it. Just because it wasnt completely secure doesnt make it right that they did this. In the end its still the fault of the hacker who broke into the PSN service and took information that wasnt his.

It is Sony's job to take their customers' faith in their network seriously and prevent this from happening in the first place. The guy who did it is certainly a dick but if someone steals from my bank, I'm going to blame the bank if it comes back to me. It's part of the promise they made to me by taking my money and keeping it "safe".

So basically all you are arguing is that you dont believe that Sony took network security seriously for the PSN.  And we should put the blame on them because of it?

The second lecture in Information Security they beat into a student's ignorant head that "IF THEY GET A HOLD OF HARDWARE, ASSUME IT IS HACKED." Sony dared to hope and dream that the PS3 will not be hacked, and proceeded to plan around that. I am sorry, but if a corporation doesn't follow what a stupid junior in college has been taught, then they deserve all the blame plus an extra 50 lashing for sheer idiocy.

So what does hacking the PS3 have anything to do with hacking the PSN?

Would it be wrong to? I mean peoples credit card info is out there, that shit should have been locked up tight as hell. I got lucky and got a new card number because mine was compromised already. I put blame on both parties but just a little more on sony.
