Forums - Sony - Sony Isnt Sure Your Credit Card Data Is Safe

I don't think I saved my credit card details on my PSN account. I had to enter in those details when I had bought Cladun (PSP) but I don't think I saved the number to my account. I'm going to regularly check my credit card statement online just in case. That's a good habit to get into anyway because you never know when someone got a hold of your credit or debit card info and started making bogus purchases with it.

If I had a PS3, I would so sell it now and I don't even have a credit card.

If I had a Wii I woudn't sell it because I don't believe in spreading misery..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Makes you wonder how many people here really know how credit cards work...

You have a charge on your card that isn't yours. You report it, it gets cancelled and a new card gets issued.

End of story. Doesn't cost you a peny...
It happened to my wife last year with Itunes...

its costing somebody money. I can gurantee you that. Either the customer who got their CC stolen. The merchant who accepted the bad CC, or sony. I know visa/mastercard won't foot the bill. Its most likey the merchant that had the card used at that will foot the bill. This sucks for all people involved except those that stole the info.

If it was next to no-one was effected and can probably get the charges cancelled and will be fixed by the time it is up, but I don't think it was seeing how no1 is reporting any cases of it, I saw like one and it's far more likely someone just grabed the guys credit card and used it

I wouldn't be concerned -- if SONY hasn't found any evidense that credit card information was able to be accessed or has been accessed in 5 days then the information is probably safe.

As for SONY's comments -- if they are still inverstigating then they cannot give information that may change later. Not to mention they are re-building the entire network for better security and closing up a number of loopholes, i can only see this as making the PSN stronger and sooner or later problems occur on networks. LIVE went down for days a few ago, PSN is down now, it has happened to bigger more important organisations (like most tax offices around the world). It'll keep happening until the internet itself gets a big overhaul since it was originally designed without security in mind (hence the need for things like SSL, IPsec, etc.)

Why would'nt you just use PSN cards. I've never used my credit card online for anything as I'm always parnoid over something like this happening. They also have cards that you can pre-load yourself, that's not tied to your bank account. I don't know if Sony accepts those cards though.

have been deleting my billing information after every purchase since anon first attacked. I don't think anon was after my account information but if anyone other than sony had a chance of accessing my data, I was going to do what I could to make sure it wasn't there when they tried.

correct me if I am wrong
stop me if I am bias
I love a good civilised debate (but only if we can learn something).

It seems the problem was not stolen credit card data, but a feature that allowed devkits testing with fake credit card numbers.

Obviously a custom Firmware called REBUG allowed any PS3 to access the dev network and enabeled unlimited downloads with that feature.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
