Forums - Nintendo - Pachter Time: Wii 2 = Dreamcast ???

I actually agree with his analysis that Nintendo's new system could be looked at as an in between system like the Dreamcast was and might have a negative effect on sales since people will just wait for the "better" system.  I might have to have my temperature taken.

I don't think that it will have the low sales that the Dreamcast did though because the Wii has been much, much, much, much, much, much, much more sucessful than the Saturn ever dreamed of being.

The games will matter more than the specs. After all, the Gamecube was fine in specs, and look how that helped.

You're right.

I was just agreeing with Pachter that the system might be getting released at an awkward time.

Well he's still basing it on specs, and while some developers would flock to greater specs and abandon this system, those people are risking bankruptcy.

This is why I stated that I only agreed with his comment about it's release time.

About the specs, we have already seen that having the console with the most power definitely doesn't assure it sales.

Well yes but Nintendo is in a situation of doomed to do, doomed to not do it.

If they make Wii 2 slightly more powerfull than PS3/X360 they will receive stream of ports from those platforms which will work for a year or two then when PS4/X720 is released they will be back to the situation where Wii is currently - a generation behind in power which will mean 3rd parties will ignore them like they did this gen.

If they make Wii 2 powerfull enough for 1080p gaming it will be problem for third parties to support it with games - development cost will raise and userbase will be small so noone will do games that push Wii 2 to the maximum and it will finish will slightly better versions of PS3/X360 multiplats. And then when PS4/X720 arrive two years later they will be more powerfull (as they use razor model of sales and will have benefit of 2 years of technology advancement and cost reductions) so the Wii will start getting worst versions of multiplat titles.

Also if innovation is indeed additional screen on gamepad it will share the fate of sisaxis in multiplatform titles as noone will bother implementing it correctly in the Wii2 version.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

but

we are AT LEAST 3 years away from the next console from sony and ms

it is a very good from Ninty to release a new console in 2012

btw, since wii will get a price drop, i m sure the wii sales will be pretty good during 2011 holidays !

Time to Work !

if the Wii2 is released next year and then the PS4 and Xbox 720 two years afterwards, then yes, the Wii2 will be a gaming system stuck inbetween generations, just like the DC was, time will tell weather 3rd Parties make games for it, but judging on their previous history, I doubt they will and the Wii2 may suffer the same fate as the DC if Nintendo follows the same path they had during the N64/GC era with releasing games for the hardcore, and not the general population (not casuals though, games both groups enjoy, like Mario Kart, NSMB Wii etc.)
