Forums - Nintendo - Pachter Time: Wii 2 = Dreamcast ???

I don`t understand why he puts Wii2 in a Dreamcast like situation? Dreamcast had to fight the market leader PS1 and the soon to become mighty PS2. Nintendo isn`t in that position. Given Wii`s success, even if it comes out way first than the other two, Nintendo has the brand to avoid failing like Dreamcast did. And actually, that`s something MS and Sony should be worried about, not Nintendo.

About the cost/price of Wii2, it probably won`t be cheap but i don`t really believe Nintendo will stay away from the mass market price for a lot. I guess that would be like leaving one big market and going after a smaller one.
But hey, i no nothing about prices/cost to be sure about this!

"Second, we believe that the Wii successor will require third party software support to recapture market share from Microsoft and Sony. If the platform is on par technologically with the PS3, it is likely that third parties will support it; if it is a significant advance over the PS3 technology, it is possible that games will have to be developed separately, rather than ported from Xbox 360 and PS3 games. A higher technological standard could mean that some publishers will be reluctant to develop for a platform with a small installed base, and will wait for greater penetration before bringing games out."
I get with what he says, it`s the conclusion seems misleading. His he taling about specifica Wii 2 games or just games in general?
I think that 3rd parties will probably probe the market with ports and if the market`s there they will probably either make them especially for Wii2 or at least base the games on Wii 2 and then port to other consoles.

this situation isn't like the Dreamcast; SEGA was only a market leader during their Genesis days and even then only for a short while. They made a LOT of bad decisions or business failings in a row with their portables, SEGA CD, 32x, and Saturn and then had to go up an extremely dominant market leader. Nintendo, on the other hand, IS the market leader and is getting a headstart on SONY and MS who are lagging FAR behind Nintendo in market dominance in all areas of the world. It would take a decision straight out of the N64 era to topple them at this point

1. He's wrong for assuming the power of the dreamcast had anything to do with its fall. So the comparison, even as it is, is still a fallacy.

2. Funny turnaround. He kept saying that simply a more powerful Wii was vital for Nintendo. Then again, he lied that his WiiHD prediction came true with the Move.

Not unless you can magically make his type of game sell 20 million.

Pacther is so entertaining.

May he never stop being a media whoring clown.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Nice to see teh analyst god never loses his magic touch. BTW, humble Malstrom too agrees 3DS and Wii2 are d0med, although, in his very humble opinion, for different reasons.  O-)

I love how no one even read the OP.

He actually doesn't call it the Dreacast at all.  And he basically says he thinks it will be successful because its going to be very innovative.  He simply said if its just an HD Wii it would fail.

So please people read before you comment.  Everyone is always so in a rush to bash Pachter but he's actually a very good analyst and seems like a genuinely nice guy.

Thank you fine sir, someone who actually bothered to read the entire post and didn't just start bashing after reading the title.

As Ben said, to summarise Pach:

"Just Wii HD will fail (like Dreamcast), but if Nintendo innovates (which Pach thinks they will), then they will be successful. In this case, a possible innovation maybe in the form of the controller."

And I agree with what he says, albeit it is somewhat obvious. Now I know people love to hate on whatever's popular, but please don't be mindless fodder to the hatewagon and read the whole story. I partially blame the OP for somewhat of a misleading title.

Pachter doesn't say much here and covers his bases. Whatever the outcome is, you can't really call him wrong for what he said here. It's like making a prediction prior to the seventh gen saying that the PS3, 360 and Wii could place in every possible order. Amazing insight.

I think Pachter makes all of these predictions, just to hear himself talk. I personally can't stand the guy and don't understand why people listen to him.
