Forums - Nintendo - Spec speculation on new system - $300 limit though, perhaps even $200.

Well I said it wouldn't cost significantly more when the royalty costs were removed from consideration. They would save some money if they chose not to have backwards compatibility with the Gamecube. As for the rest of the components the only major increase in cost is likely the I.P. of the components rather than the actual cost of the machine. Infact I would bet real money that the NES 6 will cost less to manufacture than the PS3 when it is released, controllers inclusive.

LOL are you comparing it to PS3 cost now, or at launch? cause the latter is kinda duh...

The former though... I might take that bet...

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

considering the codename panned out I think the rest of the rumors are probably in line as well.

Squilliam's projections seem about right. The only thing I'm not sure of is the use of BluRay, seeing as current drives are still a bit expensive, as well as relatively slow.

Seeing as rumors about price are between $300-$400 Nintendo might "gauge demand" once again at E3, or maybe the price will come down to whether there are 1 or 2 bundled controllers...

Bottom line, and this is really important, NO Getting HYPED at E3, no matter how cool it is!

lol

Im comparing it to the PS3 as it will be in 2012, whether the PS3 has been shrunk for the 2nd time or not.

  • Every PS3 has a HDD.
  • Both the PS3 and NES 6 will have flash memory (PS3 uses for OS).
  • PS3 has two 128 bit buses using legacy GDDR3 and boutique XDR whereas NES 6 will use common and low cost GDDR5, and at that it will have fewer chips.
  • They will both have Blu Ray drives.
  • The cost of the chips to physically manufacture will be the same or lower for the NES 6 CGPU.
  • The NES 6 will be physically no bigger and use no more power than the PS3.
  • The motherboard complexity of the PS3 will make the NES 6 look extremely primitive by comparison, complexity = cost.

alright...

so how much do you think the ps3 will cost to manufacture when N6 launches?

and how do you propose we determine the prices when it's time to call in the bets?

Lol that would be impossible unless the price of the N6 is the same or less than the price of the PS3 because otherwise there would still be room to doubt. I don't need to know what the PS3 will cost to manufacture because the architecture of the N6 will be so simple it will be ridiculed. Since its hard to actually say definitively I would bet money but theres no way to prove the winner and the timescale is too long.

However knowing who Nintendo are, I can almost guess how cheap the system will be.

One main CPU and GPU combined with 4 GDDR5 chips attached to a system die package which is essentially the innards of any smart phone minus the CPU and cellular equipment with one HDMI output and one or two USB 3.0 outputs and the whole Wi-fi/Blu Tooth/HDMI/Flash memory components standardised inside.

See this pic for what I mean:

And it won't be much if anything more complicated on the inside compared to what the iPad is already packing aside from obvious things like heat sinks and voltage regulation modules.

Well, too bad... I like your thinking... you could've won some money off of me

You guys all suck. The screen will be a mini tablet that can slide into the controller. Hence, the controller by itself will be as inexpensive as the Gamecube controller.

The tab can be taken with you wherever you go. It will be normal for a console owner to own a single tab for himself, and then some extra controllers without tabs.

That's how the controller works.

So Nintendo can still launch at a price comparable to 360 and PS3.

:P

 $200. Lol.

It's going to cost $350. Deal with it.

Oh, and eat crow.

But...but...I've been waiting for this moment since he started naysaying.

Forgive me. Perhaps I shouldn't have.
