Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto explains lack of dual analog controls for 3DS

Wondering why the 3DS lacks a second analog nub? Shigeru Miyamoto finally answered that very question during a recent press event in Paris.

Miyamoto explained that Nintendo considered adding a second circle pad, though ultimately decided against it because they felt that it’s common to use your finger to play. In terms of camera control, Miyamoto believes that the system’s built-in gyoscope should be more effective than an additional circle pad.

I don't mind this, because they have the stylus, so it encourages people to do more interesting things with it... think twewy.

If you put two analogue sticks it will differentiate itself even less. And become no different than a portable wii
Which imo is what the psp suffers from... nothing on the psp wouldn't be better on the ps3. While there are some DS games that are best fit for DS.

Granted lots of developers will still be lazy.

Using stylus for camera is horrible, and you still need stop pressing the buttons.

yeah but those nubs aren't very good either. And you have the stylus in your right hand.

Granted if you are left handed I can see why the setup would be worse.

Not a good excuse and a missed opportunity. Its my biggest gripe with the 3DS.

CoD4 was the first and last time I played an FPS game on DS. The touch screen ruins the experience.

I hear Dimentium does it far better.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Well I've tried a few other games, Dementium included. They all felt basically the same to me.

Just using the DS like that is uncomfortable. It would be nice if they atleast gave you the option to look around with the buttons like PSP shooters. Playing CoD on PSP like that was enjoyable and accurate enough for me to disable aim assist.

Dual analog > all

Overall, I don't really care about dual analog.  I actually loved the MP:Hunters control scheme, far more than I do dual analogue.

The big problem with not having dual analog and having the single analog stick above the d-pad is that the control scheme for Monster Hunter is going to have to change.

We should have 3 analog sticks and a touch pad just for the hell of it. then we will need 3 arms and a half.

I feel that the dual anolog control only really benefits FPS which is something thats never taken off on handhelds. Although, if FPS take off on the NGP then I'm sure nintendo will put it on there next handhald. To me a handheld shouldn't try and conform itself to being a mini-console, it also proves that even if nintendo is trying to attracted third parties they aren't going to jump through every hoop to get it.
