Hmm it could be poor man's mouse equvalent if it's touchscreen like the lower one in DS.
Still i don' think it willl work as screens in DS are close to each other so you don't lose concentration when moving from one to other but here is huge diffrent.

Like someone said it can be used to clean up the hud in alot of games like fighters and some shooters. im sure nintendo has some ideas if it is coming with a screen on the controller. Seems to be more possibilities than not.
The users will wear big fake noses, so separing more sharply left and right eye fields, then they'll watch at the controller screen with one eye and at the TV with the other. TAH-DAH! Glassesless 3D on big screens too! At a fraction of the current price, BTW.
its useless for competitive gaming.
by the time you look at the controller then the tv again, you will probably be dead in a shooting game, crash in a racing game, lose posession in a football game etc.

By the way, is there any info on whether it'll be 3D or not? I think it would make sense and it'd be pretty cool
...if it actually turns out to be 3D it could also benifit multiplayer in 3D, where if it was splitscreen other players' sections would be distracting in 3D
Also, I think this screen is just begging for a Pikmin game to be made for it

Nintendo has already used this idea before in Zelda Four Swords on the gamecube using GBAs as controllers and it was really fun. Has no one played that game?
