Probably the best comparison in terms of the month it launched would be the GBA.
~30 days after launch
Japan: 1,477,217 sold 103k in the last week.
NA: 1,337,385 sold 99k in the last week
EU: 526,849 sold 53k in the last week.
Total: 3,341,451
The Japanese launch was in March, 3 months before the Euro launch. It launched in America June 11th, and Europe June 22nd.
I think one of the big reasons for the pessimism surrounding the 3DS launch is due to Japan. In 8 weeks the GBA had sold 1,877,944, and was still doing around 100k weekly. After 8 weeks the 3DS is at 897,095 (Media Create), and doing less than 30k weekly. It is nearly a million behind, and selling 3 times less. The GBA also stayed quite strong through the summer months having multiple weeks over 100k from June through August.
Although the fact that NPD numbers were so far below VGC numbers probably didn't help matters. Same with the European first week being adjusted down almost the same day they got put up I believe. Toss in the fact that a lot of people expected that 4 million initial shipment to sell out without many problems, and it makes it look worse.
3DS sales are fine to me. What do you expect? When the big games come so will the massive sales.
If we compare 3DS and GBA, so much factor must be considered, like there isn't any other handheld before in Japan like PSP now. Smartphone is also another factor. So with these thing considered, I guess 3DS is selling really well. Hopefully, when the killer apps for 3DS is out, it's gonna faster it's growth.

That is very true. Look at the PS3.
| superchunk said: As the 3DS launched there have been some threads/news come out that essentially claimed it wasn't as good as was expected. I thought it would be good to put out a thread that compares 3DS's launch to its most recent counterparts. Here is a list of various consoles first 30 days summed up. A few didn't launch worldwide at same time and I simply totaled each respective areas (NA, JP, Others) first 30ish days. 3DS 2.1m (Two more weeks left for 30 days outside of Japan; only through april 9) Even though 3DS hasn't been out a full 30 days in NA/Others yet, it's still right in line with everyone else and will likely sell about what the PSP did when those couple weeks are added. I'll update this thread for the first 60days when that time hits, but I think this demonstrates that the 3DS is perfectly in-line when considering its price and selection of games at launch. All totals are from VGC of course. |
Although it's roughly in line with PSP, I'm still confident that it will sell at least 5M, even 10M more lifetime!
The main reason is japan imo... their is a combination of a high price tag the recent quake that hit japan which has definitely affected the spending power. A lack of games is another reason really..
