Yeah but how many of those iPhone/iPod sales are actually upgrades from the older models.  I doubt the install base is anywhere near 187M.

I don't see people upgrading making much of a difference to the install base.

Do you think people simply throw their phone, pads and touches when they upgrade?

iPhones are expensive pieces of kit (my cousin sold his 3GS for over £200 last month and that was almost two years old). iPhones hold their value very well.

You don't simply throw away that kind of money when you upgrade. You either trade it in, sell it (meaning it's sold on to someone else) or you give it to someone. Not many people have an iphone of anykind lying around unlike most other older phones with little value.

The same with iPads and iPod touches, many sell or give away the old and move on to the new which hardly affects the userbase.

I would say the install base is quite near to the 187m

Yes some do throw it away I am sure of it. I upgrade every year to a new phone and I know what happens to those phones after a couple years.  They end up in a drawer or in the garbage.  Sure not everyone does it the same way but it happens.

I would say the install base is probably closer to 140-150M

Hell yeah, I just found out that my Captivate sells for ~$275 on eBay.

Glad I saved the original box, just in case I ever decide to part with it.

Good for you. What's that? £160.00 or thereabouts? That's pretty good for a phone that was released last year.

You are right though, ebay is the way to go. An iphone 3gs (unlocked) can go for up to almost $500.00 on ebay.

Unless it is required for backward compatibiltiy I always sell the old and get the new.

I paid $125 for it so I can't complain. However I still have ~ 1 1/2 years left on my contract but I made sure I did my research first before buying. The phone is very high in the graphics department (One of the best overall) and the homebrew scene just seriously kicks ass. The custom ROMs the community pushes out far surpasses the buggy garbage Samsung gives me along with its bullshit AT&T bloatware.

It is a wonderful thing since the bloatware only slows your device down.

Think of PCs if you couldn't do a fresh Windows install without all the garbage that comes with the PC from the retailer.

And to think that people say bad things about the homebrew scene.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

The install base for games sure isn't LOL

Well, good for Apple, still even 300m would not kill console gaming, this people buys apps, generally cheaper ones, real gaming experiences are not there, even if some big brands are having portings of some kind.

cut

Let me say that you're right on there: I phrased it wrong, saying what's a real gaming experience and what's not is subjective, for me playing with only you finger already means not having a real experience, but I can understand that some could find it entertaining.

Well, I never said everything on Nintendo platforms is a real gaming experience, neither all Nintendo's titles (Wii Play is something indie-like). I can't replay back since your point of view differs from mine, all I can say is that out of 350k apps I don't think there are 5k good ones. And this makes me saying that the, as I called it, "real gaming" (AAA titles I could say to express what I meant) is and will remain on consoles.

No, I don't own a smartphone, but if we only could speak of what we have or know perfectly wouldn't it be a sad world?

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

187 million units all with "apple pricing". No wonder they are posting billions in profit when they are selling iphones 100 more than HTC desire which has an bigger screen and better camera and widgets.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong
