I can't think of any. All I can come up with are FPS games where you go through a line, with scripted events happening at least 10 times per level. The biggest thought provoking action is choosing which 3 weapons ( /- 1 depending on the game) to hold onto because console controllers suck at handling more than 5 guns. The last really interesting one was probably Metro 2033 because some levels could be completed in several different ways.

Edit: Several different ways meaning a few completely different approaches.

It's about perspective. I don't think console shooters are necessarily worse than PC shooters, just different. I miss stuff like the original F.E.A.R., Half-Life 2, & Unreal Championship, yes, but some console shooters are good enough that they don't have to replicate what the PC has.

Yeah but I see that very same difference, the hand-holding, as negative for gaming. What we need is for games to be games, not quasi-movies.

I was never really bugged by over-simplification. As long as it retains the feel of previous Deus Ex titles (which judging from most of the footage - it does), I'm happy.

Which previous title? The godly one or the bucket of shit? Because the last gameplay they showed really reminded me of the latter.

OT: GOod to hear about the highlighting. I don't know why it's even being put in place, but I guess with stupid people playing games now they need all the help they can get. Now if they can remove that retarded cover system and regenerating health (add it in as an augmentation like the first one, and if you remember it was too slow to be too useful in fights themselves). all will be back on track.

Sigh. Why can't someone just make a pre-2001 shooter with better physics and graphics?

The FPS genre has been completely fucked by consoles. Now everything is geared for the lowest common denominator, which appears to be a mentally stilted 9 year old with a caffeine addition.

Challenge us, developers. Please. No more regen health, arrows pointing toward our goal, unlimited weapon/ammunition, highlighted "use" objects, or any of that nonsense. Make the game HARD, for fuck's sake. And no, I don't just mean make every enemy take 45 rounds to drop. That's not fun, either. Shooters should be a healthy blend of talent and smarts. That's why they became popular in the first place and why multi-player games have dominated the genre. The more you dumb down the game, the more people will chase after a human opponent, the only thing left that challenges them.

When much of what you aks for may not earn the biggest payback, it's no wonder devs have moved that way. I agree with some of what you say (I miss my PC-only days as a teenager), but I also feel like some console FPS titles (which are strictly to it) are too good to pass up.

I still play them as well. It's not even that devs need to make the hardest game ever... if they even gave advanced players the option to turn off some of that stuff, I'd be content.

Except for regenerating health. Seriously, make it go away. Half of the fun of older games was the "OMGOMGOMG I'm FUCKED" moments where you're stealthily moving through halls with almost no health, trying to find the nearest health pack.

I made a big incoherent post about regening health right here:

The way they described it was that they felt it made sense if Jenson had augmented vision and actually aided immersion. Obviously, lots disagreed, lol.

I'm not that bothered about the cover system (although hopefully you can still use shadows to some extent) but I think they should have regen health as an augmentation, even if they allow you to have access to it early. Maybe someone can mod it in later. I remember some of the original Deus Ex mods were fantastic.

Did they even mention they will release mod tools? I may have missed the news.

The cover also bothers me because it is useless. What's the point of cover if you have a crouch button and strafe buttons?

Are there any top FPS' without regen health now? The only one I can think of is Half-Life 2/ Episodes 1 & 2.

Not sure, but there'll be a demand for it so I hope they release an SDK.

As for the cover system, it reminds me of Splinter Cell in certain aspects and I thought that method worked relatively well.

Good point. I still have to complete that come to think of it :P

Either way, it's a ridiculous minority now. It's the "Let's be Halo/Call of Duty" effect. Annoying...

really? correct me if I'm wrong but I remember it had one but it was very slow and you still had to rely on medpacks(mostly for mutants). Were you playing normal or ranger?

Take note ninja friigin theory...
