Horrible is not what I would call it. They're selling fine, but being outsold by a significant margin by the PS3 this holiday season (let's leave the Wii out of the comparison for obvious reasons).

It's a mix of reasons, really, let's see why the 360 is doing worse than the PS3:

1- MUCH less brand value (the Playstation brand is really powerful in many European countries).
2- It has been out longer, so it's not its first Christmas (unlike the PS3).
3- The PS3 just had a 33% (200 €) price cut in Europe, while the 360, which has been out for much longer, only had a 50 € price cut.

i don't know if it's already said
but i think that the hardware problems of the 360 aren't without consequences in Europe
there's been quite some publicity around it

plus
if you look as how the ps2 has sold over the years in europe
you'll see that the total sales of the ps2 are more divided over the years it's been out
but in the us, when the 360 came out, many gamers where ripe for a new console
4/5 years after their purchase of a ps2 or xbox
while in europe much more people are just now getting around their forth or fifth year with those consoles
so what i mean with this is that while in the us millions of gamers come in to next gen gaming all together, in europe it's again more divided around the last two years and coming years, and this of course favors sony cause the ps3 will have more games as the time passes and will be cheaper

look at the ps2 sales
the gamers who have bought it the last three years and are doing it now, will probably switch over to the ps3 the coming years
why wouldn't they, cause by the time they go for and new console the ps3 will have a great library and an nice price
where in the us the switch over point is more concentrated at the beginning of the new generation and so has favored the 360

One should take a quick note:

Xbox 360 sales are up over 50,000 units this week in Europe.

Last year ~161,000 Units
This year ~ 217,000 units.

Not too bad, eh?

Its not the 360 doing bad, its the PS3 finally having a decent European Xmas (because of the price cut).

Keep in mind the PS3 has VERY LITTLE price flexibility at this point, I really doubt Sony can afford to go lower then $399/$499 any time over the next half year.

Whereas Microsoft has managed to hold strong at $349, this gives them an awesome opportunity to mantain a pricing edge for the next year. They will beat Sony to the $299 by a longshot and that is when sales should really pickup.

Anyways, Sony managed to stay alive this holiday season, but the Xbox is really putting some distance between the two consoles over the holidays. Americas is still the largest and more important market and the Xbox is still King of the HD Consoles.
