Forums - Sales - Why Wii2 does not mean 720/PS4

Everything depends on the x factor that the wii2 might bring...or whether there is a x factor at all. Because if theres no x factor then its just another hd console...just with no software. Makes u wonder what the hell is it that made nintendo jump to the next console? what made them believe that people would get xcited about the wii2? thats the main thing im looking forward to finding out at e3. Because surely a price cut and more software could have kept wii going for a few years as market leader...gona be really interesting to find out :D cant wait! I just hope neither company messes up this coming gen cos i for one like choice.

This will be the first generation that Nintendo is first to draw the gun. Sony sales are already on the decline year over year; and both systems will see excellerated loss as the Cafe comes into existence.  Particularly if it has a price match.

If Nintendo manages to get the price right, you can be guaranteed that it will be more advanced than the PS3 and Xbox 360 in every way. On top of that, the Nintendo namebrand is the most powerful; so far this generation 235 million Nintendo systems have sold between Wii and DS - also 1.35 billion pieces of software.

Essentially, the Cafe is a death sentence for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the longer the successor consoles wait, the more difficult it is going to be for them to succeed in the coming generation.

Of course, all this matters on Nintendo's price; if they pull a Sony, they could see themselves doing as poorly as the PS3 has done this generation.

I think many people forget how much a mass-market price can do for a playstation console.

Hmmm..  Here's someone else thinking along my same lines in regards to Wii / Cafe

http://n4g.com/news/743956/nintendo-should-support-a-hd-console-wii-and-3ds

That sounds pretty neat, but after reading it I thought of something else

Why not make two versions of the same console, one with more power (call it A), and the other with the new innove controller thingy (B) and each had there own library of games

If someone with version-A wanted to play the version-B games, they'd buy the add-on (kinda like Kinect/MotionPlus's situation) - - - The problem would arise if someone with version-B wanted to play version-A games (like next gen 3rd party multiplats)...

Could Nintendo offer an upgrade solution the same way a PC would have? Like leave a slot for expansion or maybe send the console in for the upgrade?

Of course the system's architecture would have to build with this in mind, but I kinda like the idea

How is that different that what Nintendo is (presumably) doing now?  The 'cafe' is system A and can play all Wii games (if you own/buy a Wiimote).   Wii becomes system B here but obviously with that issue - can't be upgraded - unless you buy a Cafe which also plays all your current Wii games (then sell the Wii or move it into another room).

I think that's the very dynamic Nintendo is going for.  Get non-gamers hooked with Wii, then if/when they want to upgrade the 'Cafe' becomes the obvious choice because it plays all the games they already own and all the games they want to (3rd party HD titles) plus some unique stuff all to itself.

What it won't have are Sony's strong first party line-up which will continue to drive PS3 sales.

like a PSP price drop? Yeah....  The HD twins are hiting saturation. Wii 2 will only accelerate that. The '10 year plan' can still continue even if they introduce a new system.

I disagree. I think the Wii2 will effectively mark the 8th generation of gaming. Yea PS3 and 360 sales are peaking, but in 2012 they will be down, and Wii2 will steal the spotlight. By 2014 PS3 and 360 sales will be really weak, and not releasing a successor console by then would be as if they are giving Nintendo their sales. PS3 and 360 won't be able compete with a new console in 2012, sales will drop fast. a PS4/720 will come out at latest 2014, but likely 2013. This will fall in with the 10-year life cycle proposed by Sony (as PS3 will still sell 2 years after the PS4 is released).

I agree with you're Wii/Wii2 sharing software logic, much like NES and SNES, this may happen.

Let's wait until E3.

If the Wii 2 is true... you can bet your ass MS and Sony will follow suit the very next year. Holding out would be suicide.

I disagree. Wii2 will be the first console for 8th gen. If Wii2 becomes a HUGE success just like the original Wii then Sony and MS will have to do something about it. Sony and MS WILL announce their next gen consoles on E3 2012 if it happens. Expect Kinect and Move to work on the consoles.

i agree with the OP, i dont see Sony releasing a PS4 to compete with a new Wii. espeically since the consoles' features like 3D and blu ray are still relevant in todays market. some users havent upgraded to HD, yet alone made the jump to 3D. so i think the PS3 is able to hold its own in the market for a long time. i can see Sony pricing the PS3 at the $300 price point when the Wii 2 launches.

i think Nintendo are trying to force Sony and Microsoft into releasing new consoles.

if it was the PS3 alone, Sony wont release again. but the 360 is on the ropes in EMMEA and it has kicked the bucket in Japan. consequently lagging worldwide. so its possible that Microsoft will launch their new console in 2013 a year after the WIi 2.

theres no way i can see the 360 going toe to toe with the PS3 and Wii 2. so i think Sony will release their new console based on when Microsoft releases theirs NOT based on when Nintendo releases theirs.

I'll assume Nintendo releases Fall 2012

If both Microsoft and Sony can hold of until Fall 2013 or later and release much more powerful consoles than Nintendo I can see Nintendo's console wiped off the market if Nintendo is unable to attract the "casual" crowd. Nintendo third party relations are going to be any better than they have been for generations.

Also if Microsoft releases Fall 2013 Sony can still safely launch early 2014.

Suppose Nintendo releases a system in 2012 that has a key innovation that people find remarkably desirable at a price that people believe is reasonable; on top of this innovation, the system also has a significant advancement in processing power and features. The system sells quickly and third party publishers soon decide that they need to support the system well (especially in the launch period of Sony and Microsoft’s consoles) to be profitable; and the vast majority of games are designed around Nintendo’s system, potentially with some enhancements for Sony and Microsoft’s eventual consoles.

...

this hypotheical has two rather large assumptions though.

1 the rumore that the OP is commenting on suggests that there is not significant advanement in processing power but rather nintendo is targeting apporximently the same as th3 ps3.

2  first, just a general lulz at the idea of third parties supporting a nintendo console well. second, the wii is more powerful than the ps2 and yet ps2/wii multiplates where the wii version was downgraded to the ps2 level plague the wii for years.  the ps3 is somewhat more powerful than the 360 and especially has that blu ray drive extra feature but no one takes advantage of it because third parties want to be able to support the 360 as well.  thus, as the rumor suggests that nintendo is targeting the same power as the ps360, the wii2 will get dumbed down multiplates to the least common denominator of the three consoles.  that's how third parties work.
