I was extremely interested in this game until I actually heard more about it. While they did add a whole new dynasty and several decades of story, the story mode was still cut short for every kingdom - in one case, even shorter than before (Wei's story ends at Fan Castle). Also, story mode battles can't be played as any other character besides the pre-designated one which is a huge drawback. Conquest mode sure sounds like lots of fun but the fact that I can't freely play story mode battles as any character pretty much kills the game for me, as much as they've otherwise improved.
On the other hand, I'm fairly confident they'll be able to fix what's broken without breaking too much more in the next game. Unless they're more stupid than I imagine, they ought to have noticed what most complaints are about so it should be impossible not to fix them.
So yeah, as much I'd love to get the game, I don't think I can really afford a game this broken. But that's just my opinion, I can see why other might actually like the game.

Agreed, I was thinking about this, but now you tell me that it is a no buy
I remember the days of Dyansty Warriors 4 and 5, and playing through with Sun Jian and leveling him and his bodyguard up... those were the days

Actually what they made make sense.
It's doesn't make much sense to play early Wei battles with Cao Pi while he was still a toddler or play late Wu battle with a Sun Jian that is actually dead........
Besides Conquest mode is big enough that you can play a tonn of battles with whatever character you want.( and there are more characters than in previous DW, you get 62 characters to choose from)
Not sure how you can complain about the lenght of story mode either as in DW6 story mode consisted of 6 battles per character.
Here story mode for each kingdom is around 20 battles or so..
My main issue with Dynasty Warrior 7 is how easy the game is on normal mode and not challenging at all.....

Maybe it doesn't make sense to play Yellow Turban Rebellion and such as Cao Pi, but at least let me play the epic battles as more than just one character! There's probably not even a single battle where you have only one character that makes sense, and even if it doesn't make any sense, story mode battles are much more interesting than random conquest mode battles - even if they are good in their own right. To me, battles without any backstory or special events feel soulless, that's for sure.
DW6 was a failure anyway, don't mention it. Or do mention if you wish, but if individual musou modes are six battles or so, at least there's more than just four characters to play as. Besides, Wei without Zhuge Liang's campaigns is dull and so is Shu without post-Wuzhang battles. Jin has them, why shouldn't Wei and Shu have them? Also, Wu's story ends some 20 or so years before it actually should, and even the final battle was in reality a rather minor battle.
I just can't get over story modes cut short and soulless conquest mode battles. I like the Empires spin-offs but the battles have always felt pretty soulless to me - they are bland, boring, in a way, and I can't imagine them being better in a main series game where you have absolutely no control over your forces - if you even have them. But that's just my opinion, feel free to like the game.
